Priceline.com is a lifesaver!

Using Priceline.com I have manage to save so much money on plane tickets. Twice this past year and once last year, I went online and did a check on all the airlines ticket prices. I wanted to make a trip from San Diego to Virginia via flying into Washinton DC. Everywhere I looked, the ticket prices for a one way flight were over $600. I did finally manage to find one or two tickets that were round trip for about $350-400. And I was doing this two months in advance!
So finally I brought up Priceline.com on my computer, grabbed my roomies credit card and placed my bid. I bid $125 which would have been about just under $200 after taxes and such. About 30 minutes later I got an email saying my price had been rejected. So I went back online. Changed my bid to $150, and an hour later, boom! I had my ticket :) After taxes and such, only $224.00 for a coast to coast round trip ticket. And only one layover!
One of my friends also used this service last minute to make a trip to DC earlier this year. He put in his bid the day before he wanted to leave and got a round trip ticket for $175.00.
The only drawbacks to this service are:
If your bid is rejected, you must change your order in some way. ie. change the day you come back or leave. Not just the price.
If they accept your bid, you cannot turn it down, you give your credit card when placing the bid. So they have already put a hold on your money.
