ROAD TRIP!
Oct 16 '00
At least once, in every person's life, there is the desire to grab a huge handful of tapes, get into the car, and drive great distances living off food from truck stops. It could be because you've read Kerouac's ON THE ROAD, it could be because you've heard BORN TO RUN, it could be because you just got a cool car. Whatever. Doesn't matter. You have a car, you have maps, you have a tape with some kick-butt songs on it, you're set.
This is one trip where having no agenda at all is a very good thing. Leaving yourself open allows you to drive right past scenic overlooks if you just plain don't feel like overlooking, and also allows you to hang out at a rest stop for a half hour watching a ladybug crawl around on your hand.
You owe it to yourself, however, to avoid interstates. The USA is filled with a lot of little two-lane highways that meander through big and small towns alike, and it is along these highways that the tourist attractions you probably haven't heard of are lurking. Some of these are tourist traps, yes; but even tourist traps, when entered into with the right spirit and the right attitude, can be a blast. Or they can be a preservation of sanity -- if you have been driving endlessly for several hours through flatland and prairie, you will find yourself being entranced by the opportunity to pull over and look at the world's largest handmade buzz saw or what have you. But many of these smaller highways will also carry you from one end of the country to the other -- east to west, north to south, or the like -- allowing you to watch the country change under your tires and past your windows while giving you the chance to stop and look at things up close.
You want a road trip itinerary? Just pick one of these smaller highways and hit the road. Stop where it looks cool, keep going where it doesn't. Check out the local papers wherever you go. Just jump in and go.
