Emergency Assist Benefits

For several years we have belonged to Travel Assist via a catalog company called Damark. Some of the important benefits are for emergency evacuation, transportation of mortal remains, and vehicle return. The benefits are for anywhere in the world more than one hundred miles from your permanent residence. I even called the agent for Lifeguard, that handles the Assist program, to have it explained further to me. The agent stated that he had personally handled a couple of emergencies recently in 1999. All with success to the client. I felt that everything was on the up and up and enrolled. Fortunately, I have never had to use this program.
The Travel Assist program is bundled with another program called Buyer Privileges that is for the whole family. This gives discounts on health-related services, and a product 'referral' discount club that guarantees the lowest price or they refund double the difference.
In 2000, we joined the same type of program through Commonwealth. We enrolled via the computer to receive $200 in gas rebates during the year. I made the mistake of passing the info along to a friend and she called the Commonwealth Benefit Plan at 800-905-6247 to enroll over the phone. Because she had not enrolled over the internet she missed out on the gas rebates. I don't even recall who sent us the info from the net.
Note: The Assist benefits does not cover lost luggage, or airline delays. It is for emergency evacuation that could cost you as high as $50,000 or more. Ouch!!
All of the above cost $100 for 1 year. I call that free plus $100 in our pocket after the gas rebates.
