Pros: Easy to get to, interesting Native American design
Cons: If you're not careful or not lucky, gambling can be a real bummer.
The Bottom Line: The Mohegan Sun could be an alternative to that ship cruise or that trip to a foreign country you've been considering.

| AsWeSeeIt's Full Review: Mohegan Sun |
It seems like nearly everyone has heard about Foxwoods Casino in Ledyard, Connecticut, but you may not have heard of the other huge Native American casino in New England. Mohegan Sun, in the land of the wolf people, is the other casino, and it’s located just a few miles from Foxwoods in nearby Montville, Connecticut. If you’re planning a trip to Foxwoods and Mystic, you may want to put aside some time to visit the Mohegan Sun as well.
The casino, which opened in October, 1996 and is in the process of a huge expansion, features a Mohegan-themed design that easily makes it one of the most unique casinos in the world. Its Native American theme can be a pleasant change from the glitter of Foxwoods.
Mohegan Sun has two large casino areas, The Casino of the Earth is a large, circular space, which may be the largest casino room in the world. It's divided into four sections. Each section is decorated in the theme of one of the four seasons. In the center of the circular room is the Wolf Den Bar and Showroom. The den is large enough to accommodate over 350 people for an intimate musical performance.
The Casino of the Earth has nearly 180,000 square feet of gaming space, in which there are over 3,000 slot machines and about 200 gaming tables. The Casino of the Earth also has a separate 20,000-square-foot smoke-free slot room which has about 600 slot machines.
The other casino is the remarkable new Casino of the Sky. It has 115,000 square feet of gaming entertainment, thousands of slots, gaming tables, high-limit games, and it's own non-smoking gaming area. If you can take your eyes off the gaming action all around you for a moment, and look skyward, you'll be able to take in the Sky Dome - the world's largest planetarium dome, which crowns the casino with an ever-changing display of the constellations.
If shopping is your thing, there are dozens of shops at the Mohegan Sun. You can find everything from Native American arts and crafts to the latest fashion items from all over the world.
When you're ready to eat, there are dozens of food and beverage outlets, including many fine-dining restaurants. You'll find everything from Michael Jordan's Steakhouse, to the New England style fish house of Jasper White's Summer Shack. You'll also find many snack and beverage restaurants throughout the Mohegan Sun territory, and two buffets, the Seasons Buffet and the Sunburst Buffet, where you can get surprisingly well-prepared food for a very reasonable price.
The Sun does have a kid's area with an arcade, but frankly, I can't believe kids would look forward to spending the day at the casino. Many parents should probably avoid bringing their kids along.
The opening of the new 10,000 seat arena has expanded the entertainment possibilities for the Sun. The arena is providing concert goers and sports fans a great new venue for their favorite artists and athletes.
By the time you read this Epinion, the new 40-story hotel may be open. It has a beautiful location on the Thames River, which hopefully, the planners will take advantage of as they expand the resort. (actually a 40 story structure will probably give them a good view of Long Island!)
Tip: most gamblers believe the payouts are higher at Mohegan Sun than at Foxwoods. I can’t verify it’s true, but the locals are pretty well convinced it is.
