VIP Backpacker?
Dec 19 '00
Are you about to depart on a trip to either Europe, The States, South Africa, Canada, Australia, New Zealand or South East Asia? Are you intending on travelling on a budget? If the answer to both of these questions is ' Ohhh yes' then read on because I have the answer to all your accommodation expenses.
I introduce you to the 'VIP Backpackers Discount Card' - the greatest and most useful membership card money can buy. I am enthusiastic about it because I have used one on my travels since 1993 - In total it has probably saved me £1000's!
So how does it work?
Easy - they look for and check out every single independently owned hostel they can get there hands on. If it's up to VIP's high standards they invite the hostel owners to join the organisation. Over the years they have amassed thousands of backpacker hostels worldwide. Once you have purchased your VIP card (£14.00 from any STA Travel or VIP affiliated hostel) you will then be entitled to a discount on the cost of every night you stay at one of these 'backpackers'.
So how much can you save?
I saved a fortune whilst travelling in Australia and New Zealand - usually about AUD2.00 each night. Which will pay off the cost of your membership card in a week or so!
How many hostels are VIP affiliated?
137 in OZ
80 hostels in NZ and Fiji
Over 700 hostels in Southern Africa, Europe and North America!
So if you do get a card, use it wisely by always staying at a VIP address, which you will be able to find in the destination booklets given to you when you buy the card, you will save yourself a fortune.
What's the catch?
It's valid a year from date of issue - so make sure you buy it just before you depart.
It's non transferable, and make sure you take your passport when you buy it. Other than that it's pretty much catch free.
What else can it be used for?
You want more?......Blimey.....is a discount not enough?.....Allright, just this once....just for you.....
The card itself is actually an international phone card with $5.00 already preloaded onto it.
You also get discounts on the following: Oz and Kiwi Experience(see my Epinion to be posted in the near future), Greyhound Pioneer(Australia), Kakadu National Park trips, Ayers Rock tours, Sydney Harbour Cruises, Reef/Dive Trips, Food, Souvenirs, Qantas Flights(!), Cape Town Tours, Dolphin Watching, Kruger Park safaris, Car Hire.....I'm sorry I'm getting a bit bored of this so take my word for it, YOU CANNOT FAIL WITH A VIP BACKPACKERS DISCOUNT CARD!
My tip for the traveller who is really skint: When you stay at a VIP Backpackers hostel ask them if you can pitch your tent in their garden - they will usually let you stay for half the price of sleeping in a dorm - and still yet you use all the facilities available in the hostel itself. So all you need to do is pass out in your tent at night!
Happy travellin' Budgeteers!
