Disney Time Share (Vacation Club)
Mar 21 '00
First, if you visit Walt Disney World often (more than once every 2 years) then the Disney Time Share (which they call the Vacation Club) is actually a money saver. Our only regret is that we didn't buy sooner. The simple reason for that was, our view had been that we could not pin ourselves down to a single week or resort. We also didn't want to waste valuable time during our vacation to hear the Disney Vacation Club pitch..so we just kind of ignored it.
When a friend had purchased an interest, and began explaining how it actually worked to me...I became interested.
The basic concept is that you buy "points" (which are in fact a real estate interest, by Florida law). These points can then be cashed in every year for accommodations. Although you buy your points in a particular "home" resort (Old Key West, Boardwalk and the soon to be Wilderness Lodge new construction), you can "apply" the points to any resort. (Poly, Contemp etc.)
The benefit you get as a home resort owner, is that reservations are taken for Vacation Club members 3 months ahead of the general public.
You can also pick any week or day of the year, with the amount of points per night per resort varying with the time of year and resort itself.
Another very cool aspect is the fact that you can "bank and borrow" points from 1 year prior and after to basically triple your points for a given year. For example, we have done this and used the points for the VERY expensive Disney Cruise this April.
Right now, points are $65 per going to $67 on 5/15.
Yet another great benefit is that you have your own "travel agents" as a DVC member...if you so desire, they will plan the whole trip for you.
Don't be fooled by the "timeshare" description. Although you can enjoy similar benefits of traditional timeshare, such as trading, the flexibility of time of year and any resort is what did it for us.
