Good Hostel Card

I backpacked across Europe this summer and found the Hostels of Europe card on the Internet during my research (www.hostelseurope.com). You're supposed to get 5-15% off the room and various discounts on Internet access when you show the card at the hostel. The website recommended several hostels that I had heard good things about, so I convinced my friends to order it. The cost is 18.15 Euros or approximately $18.70 US dollars which you can pay by credit card. You must allow 2 weeks for shipping, so make sure to order in advance.
The website lists the hostels(by country) that accept the card first and then some additional ones as well. In a short and concise block of information, each hostel's name, address, telephone number, cost, whether breakfast and bedding is included are listed. Other information such as quiet or party hostels, available Internet access, appropriate discounts, bars or restaurants at the hostel is noted. For my trip I printed off the page with all this information for each city I was going to. I would also recommend printing off the directions to the hostel too...I forgot this small but necessary information and was VERY sorry. Every city we went we stayed in one of these hostels.
Although we showed the card at every hostel we visited, not all of them claimed recognition of the promised discounts. We went during the peak travel time in August and many of the rates listed were inflated. However, I do believe that the fault lies in the hostels for changing their rates...we found this to be a common problem while we traveled. With a little prodding, more than half of the hostels honored the card's discount. We definitely saved at least enough to cover the card!
For the most part, all the hostels were clean, the people very helpful and spoke English. A few of the hostels even made our stay especially enjoyable by offering great advice on places to go, offering free exchange rates and good company. These independent hostels are recommended for student travellers or people who would like a young atmosphere. I would not recommend this series of hostels for families or school groups unless otherwise suggested on the webpage.
