A little advice on the best travel websites
Jan 09 '01
I'm not a business traveler, but I do my fair share of airport hopping since I went to college out of state, and then I went to graduate school in yet another state. As the engineer that I am (and the poor college student) I've been using the internet to save money on all of those trips and here's a little advice on the matter.
1) Never buy from the first site you try.
2) Know the various airports that are within driving range since some specific combinations may be cheaper than others.
3)Try to buy your tickets at least fourteen days in advance.
4) And never give up, the airfare you're looking for is out there somewhere, you just need to find it.
And now the websites:
1) Priceline.com - Make sure you go to this one LAST. It's best if you have some idea of what the tickets SHOULD cost before you start guessing. Start very low, you may be surprised what you get. Also, remember that you will have no say over the airline or the flight times, only the dates. You will automatically buy the tickets once your bid is accepted, so be certain that you really want them.
2) Hotwire.com - This site is like priceline without the commitment. You put in the same information as priceline but this time they give you an offer right away. The catch is they won't tell you the airline or the flight times until you decide to purchase the ticket. Once they make an offer you have 30 minutes to purchase the ticket or you can't do that search again for three days.
3) Lowestfare.com - The site has lots of options other than airfare. You can get cruises and vacation packages from them. They use a typical search engine and they give you lots of options, time-wise and airline-wise. This is a great site and they have very reliable service. Plus they'll issue you an electronic ticket, unlike some other travel sites.
4) Cheaptickets.com - True to their name, the site can find very cheap tickets. Unfortunately they only give you three options per airline, which typically are very annoying flight times. They also send paper tickets, which can be annoying if you're not at home during the day to get the tickets.
5) Travelocity.com and Expedia.com - More search engines that give decent low airfares. It's good to check them all because sometimes different sites are having specials. Travelocity seems to give me a lot of TWA flights, so they might have a special deal with that airline.
Good luck with your traveling!
