Weary travelers the world over whisper my name in one another's ears.
"If you're going to be in New York, call Leslie, stay with her."
I like to think it's my pleasant company and devil may care hostessing that does it, but in all the apartments I've lived in in New York, this one has seen the most houseguests. I couldn't be happier about it. I like having houseguests. I really do. I have an inflatable aero bed, which I can put up and take down in a jiffy and it's a delight to sleep on, esepcially when swathed in flannel covered down comforters and high thread count pillow cases. I know how to nest.
Guests complain about the stairs and are initially bewildered by the odd placement of a shower stall in the middle of my kitchen, but after a half day, it starts to make sense to them too. I have just enough counter space to make a great meal, just enough room to seat four comfortably, lots of fluffy towels, and a fine selection of beers and wines and other juice and soda type beverages, usually selected with the guest in mind. As for entertainment, there's scintillating conversation on good days, and high speed internet access, a modest but impeccable video library, scads of books, and a killer CD collection. There is no television reception, but really, who cares? You'll want to turn off the TV and watch the cats anyway.
No one has ever said exactly why they come back again and again, but I have a feeling it's just the general good vibe. The place, if I do say so myself, has good ki, (energy) an anomaly for small overcrowded spaces. The muted lighting and warm colored paint offers a certain kind of coziness and charm one typically does not expect in New York City, while the large windows and high ceilings keep it from being dreary. It's very clear this is a house someone lives a very specific life in, not just an architectural shell, or a decorating coup scrupulously maintained. Everything was meant to be used and enjoyed, but still has a certain beauty. Well, except the really ugly end table I junk picked a few years back, but it's kind of inobtrusive.
Location is key - in the heart of west midtown, no matter where you're going, you're halfway there. Close to Port Authority, most bridges, Penn Station, Grand Central and subways, it's also easy to catch a cab right out front. Insider shopping tips and restaurant referrals are provided at no additional charge. Small cocktail parties are welcome, as long as the attendees don't mid piling up on the bed. Pillows are in abundance.
The environment is feminine but not foofy or fussy. The back of the building placement of the unit insures quietude. When in New York, if you're a friend of mine, my apartment is definitely where you want to stay. What it lacks in privacy and glamor it makes up for in love and charm.
And of course, the price is right, stays of up to four days cost no more than a simple thank you, longer stays are paid for in bottles of mid-priced Shiraz.
