I've been completely won over by Travelocity.com, and I can't believe I ever ordered airline tickets over the telephone. This site is extremely user-friendly, and allows you to view several options before making a choice.
Here's how it works: They have a fare-finder feature that allows you to choose your dates, preferred times of departure and arrival and destinations. You can also choose to include (or exclude)particular airlines and non-stop versus straight-through flights. Click, and they show you several itineraries. You can reset your choices for further options, and they even give you hints for lowering your fares.
But the part I love is their e-mail list. You sign up and tell them where you want to go and how much you're willing to pay. When a fare meets your criteria, they e-mail you. The price, of course, depends on where you're going, but every flight I've bought here has been a deal. ($188, two winters in a row, round trip from Boston to Tampa.)
Using this site, I found a fare from Boston to Phoenix for $200, so I showed up on my best childhood friend's doorstep, unannounced, for her birthday. The look on her face was worth the price of the ticket.
