Student Travel Discounts

Having spent six months overseas as an exchange student, I can honestly say that travelling as a student can be both rewarding and inexpensive, if you know how to do it.
First of all, before you go, go to Council Travel and get an International Student identity card. This ID will get you free or reduced admission to a lot of sights while you travel. For example, I got into the Prado in Madrid for free with mine. If you're planning on doing a lot of travelling within a compressed period of time, a Eurorail pass is a good purchase as well.
Once you arrive, finding a travel agency that caters to students is a good idea if you're going to based out of one place. These agencies generally can get lower rates, especially if you're willing to go on group tours. I went on several weekend trips this way and saved a lot of money.
Remember convents and monasteries. Hostels receive a lot of promotions and are pretty cheap. However, monastic communities often offer the same services and are typically cleaner. They are also more likely to have available space than hostels, especially in popular destinations and during the high season. of course the flaw is that they usually cater to one gender or the other.
The major thing to remember with student discounts is to look, listen, and ask. You can't get a discount when it's available if you don't know it's there.
