Bargains for Students

Oct 10 '99

If you are a student, there are a lot of travel discounts and destination resources available just for you. Here's my roundup of the best...

STUDENT TRAVEL AGENCIES
Council Travel (http://www.counciltravel.com) and STA (http://www.sta-travel.com). The two leaders in on-line student bookings, both travel agencies have access to great international fares you won't find anywhere else. They also are often able to get around the normal restrictions discount tickets may have. Especially if you are travelling internationally, be sure to check with each of these first.

Rail Connection (http://www.railconnection.com). A new site, it appears to be a good place to check if you are buying Eurail passes. They "Conducter" feature is well done, and can be a big help in the often difficult decision of which pass is best for your travel, and, if you decide to book with them, they throw in a bunch of freebies.

STUDENT TRAVEL NEWS
Smarter Living Student Deals (http://www.smarterliving.com/student). This is by far the most comprehensive listing of student deals on the Internet. They currently have a couple dozen deals for students. You can sign up for a free e-mail service that notifies you when new student bargains are available, along with a really useful newsletter that summarizes the Internet airfares from all the major airlines each week.

American College SAAver Fares (http://www.aa.com - you need to login first). This is an e-mail service you can sign up for from American Airlines that will deliver you periodic student-only specials. In the past, the deals have been very good.

CollegePlus (http://www.collegeplus.com). Run by United, this is basically a special frequent flier program just for students. Basically you get bonus miles for being a student, plus they send you coupons just for signing up. If you are a student, you should do this.

DESTINATION GUIDES
Rough Guides (http://travel.roughguides.com). Solid advice from the excellent book series, with all the book info on-line. Better than the standard books for budget and off-the-beaten path advice.

Lonely Planet (http://www.lonelyplanet.com). Similar to Rough Guides, good ideas and basic destination info for a budget-minded student or adventure traveler.
