80 Degrees and Snow? Must Be Christmas at Disney!
Jan 08 '01
We spent the first day of our Disney vacation at MGM. We had just finished eating dinner and as we were walking around, we noticed that it was snowing along one of the streets. We walked closer to get a better look. It was 80 degrees and we had been hot the entire day so we knew that it wasn't really snowing, but the scene was so realistic. It looked like it was actually snowing! After we caught a few snowflakes on our hands, we realized that they were soap suds that were being blown from fans on the roofs of the buildings. MGM also has a display of five million Christmas lights that decorate the houses of the backlot. Every part of every house was decorated. Chevy Chase's house in National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation doesn't even begin to compare with the houses at MGM. Cast members hand out paper glasses similar to 3D glasses which make each of the lights look kind of like a snowflake. MGM also has a Christmas parade performed by the characters of Beauty and the Beast. They invite a few children to participate. And, of course, the decorations wouldn't be complete without a Christmas tree - a really, really big Christmas tree.
The Magic Kingdom is also decked out for the holidays. A very large, beautiful Christmas tree stands near the entrance. We happened to see the lighting of the tree at dusk one evening. It was truly amazing! And Main Street looks quite festive decorated with Mickey-shaped wreaths. Donald Duck's Christmas tree lot is set up along Main Street. There is a red sleigh sitting in front of the Christmas trees which makes a great spot for family pictures. The Magic Kingdom also has a Christmas parade which includes an appearance by Santa. Even story time with Belle (from Beauty and the Beast) has a Christmas theme.
The entrance to Epcot's World Showcase is a tunnel of white lights. Like MGM and the Magic Kingdom, Epcot has a beautiful Christmas tree that is even more beautiful when it is lit. You can even catch a Christmas concert with a choir singing familiar carols.
We stayed at Caribbean Beach which was decorated with a Caribbean Christmas theme. The wreaths and garland had sparkly fruit in place of the traditional pine cones and berries.
Disney pays attention to the littlest detail and Christmas is no exception. The decorations are beautiful! Christmas time at Walt Disney World is the best! We had the opportunity to travel to Disney World the second week of December. Temperatures were in the upper 70s and lower 80s all week which seemed a little strange to my family since we are from the Midwest and used to cold, snowy winters. But it didn't take long for us to get into the Christmas spirit with all of the festivities at Disney World.
