My son flew 2 doz times by age 21/2

The first flight my son took was at age 7 months and that was to England. Since that time, he has been on more than 2 dozen domestic and international flights, including one to Australia. What I found to be most helpful was to bring a compact, fairly noiseless NEW toy that he didn't see until we were in flight. Nothing with a lot of pieces either! And I didn't pay a lot of attention to the age group because an Etch A Sketch kept him busy for a long time and that was rated for higher than his age group. A couple of new books and/ or magazines are essential, too.
I kept a carry on bag in the overhead with cameras and things that shouldn't go in luggage, but that I wouldn't need in flight. Then I had a bag with his goodies, some snacks, juice, etc under the seat where I could easily reach it.
My son was seated in his car seat on some flights, which was a great relief and kept him in place. On those that he sat with me, I put up the arm rests so that my husband, my son, and I could comfortably sit all three of us in two seats. You can bet on every flight, eyes belonging to those seated around us would roll and faces would grimace at the thought of riding hours with a toddler; however, without fail, my son was very well behaved and quiet. There were a few who actually commented on his good behavior!
So, don't leave home without a couple books and a really neat toy - but make sure they are new and the child has not seen them prior to boarding!
