Stealing Kisses Right Under Mickey's Nose!

Nov 10 '00

It is no mistake that Walt Disney World is one of the top honeymoon destinations in America. If you think stealing kisses under Mickey's watchful eye and the eyes of thousands of young children is virtually impossible, then you are in for a pleasant surprise. There are romantic secrets hidden throughout the Walt Disney World resort. Here are a few of my personal favorites:

THE POLYNESIAN RESORT

In my humble opinion, the most alluring, romantic, exotic resort in Disney and its surrounding area is the Polynesian. Rooms are pricey -starting around $275 pre night during value season. If you can afford it, you won't be disappointed! Spend a little extra for a lagoon view room and you will be able to watch Magic Kingdom's fireworks display from the comfort and privacy of your own room.

However, if you are like most of us and on a budget that doesn't quite stretch that far, never fear. The Polynesian can still provide you with an incredibly romantic evening and at no cost! Polynesian's beach is right on the lagoon with a beautiful view of Cinderella's castle. Cabanas and wooden swings decorate the waterfront. During the off-season, this beach is almost deserted at night. Grab a cozy blanket if its a cool evening, claim your swing and cuddle together to watch the Electric Water Pageant nightly at 9pm on the lagoon. Check with the front desk for the times of the Magic Kingdom fireworks display and stick around the beach for that. From that location, you will even be able to hear the announcer and the music during the fireworks. (Surely you can think of something to do in that dark, romantic location for a little while!) Need a suggestion for passing the time (you're kidding right?!)? Try a moonlit stroll around the grounds. Paths are lit with fire torches and decorated with tropical plants and trees.

THE BOARDWALK

Again, you don't have to be a guest at this resort to enjoy its romance. Welcome to 1930s Atlantic City. After dark, the Boardwalk Promenade comes alive with excitement. My favorite activity here is to rent a two-person surrey and ride around Crescent Lake. (For those of you who are wondering, a surrey is a bicycle-type vehicle with four wheels instead of two. You sit side-by-side and pedal the car.) If you are too tired for this romantic adventure, try relaxing at the BelleVue Room where you can enjoy a drink while listening to a 1930 radio show. Or grab a hotdog from one of the many vendors on the promenade and just enjoy the ambiance. Have extra energy? Check out Atlantic Dance. If you're lucky, you can even catch Epcot's Illuminations display from the second story balcony.

THE WILDERNESS LODGE

Here you can get lost in the woods and completely forget that in are actually amidst one of the world's top tourist destinations! On a cool night, cuddle together in front of the fireplace in the corner of the lobby. At 3:30pm each day, the lodge offers a free tour with samples of foods from all the restaurants at the Wilderness. You don't have to be a resort guest to attend. The Artist Point restaurant is a great place for a romantic meal, and if you are looking for something a little lighter, try an appetizer at the adjacent Territory Lounge. Also at the Wilderness Lodge, you can rent boats (including the ever-famous water mice) and cruise around Bay Lake.

OTHER ROMANTIC TIPS AND LOCALS

-Disney transportation offers a free boat cruise to/from Downtown Disney and Port Orleans. This is incredibly romantic after dark. Have dinner at Port Orlean's Bonfamille's Cafe before heading off to a night of dancing and laughter at Pleasure Island. (Get into an early show at the Comedy Warehouse and hang around the lobby at the Adventurer's Club until they whisk you into the library.)

-In Disney's Epcot, you can find quiet romantic corners in France and the United Kingdom. France -need I say more? United Kingdom -steal a few moments (and a few kisses) in the backyard garden area. You will find a few out-of-the-way benches hidden in the corners to rest at for awhile.

-Of course the evening fireworks and parades at all the parks are incredibly romantic. The Magic Kingdom's Fantasy in the Sky Fireworks is especially wonderful. If you happen to be there over Valentine's Day, they put on a special fireworks display for lovers. Also, MGM Studios has an evening show called Fantasmic. Although not particularly romantic, it is an unbelievable show and should be on your list of not-to-miss attractions. Epcot's Illuminations is another not-to-miss event. If money is no object, Disney offers a private cruise during this event on a vintage speedboat called Breathless. You can get availability and pricing information from the Yacht Club Resort.

-A ride on the monorail is always a romantic adventure as you see all the key sights in the Magic Kingdom and Epcot areas. Take the resort monorail after dark over to the Contemporary Resort and check out the view from the 15th floor observation deck.

These are just a few of my personal favorites to get you started on your own romantic vacation. I'm sure you'll discover many more! Please feel free to share your favorites with me!
