Pleasure Island - 6 Years Can Make a Difference

Jun 08 '00 (Updated Jun 10 '00)

The last time I was in Florida was in 1994 when I attended a Student Government Convention. Needless to say, the last time I came to Pleasure Island back then, there were a few things that were different. First off, Planet Hollywood wasn't even complete, I wasn't able to get into Mannequins because I wasn't 21, so it's safe to say that when I got to Pleasure Island and saw all the changes, I was like a little kid on Christmas morning opening my gifts. All I could do was say "Wow!!!"

This place is awesome. The admission is fairly cheap ($20), but we got in for half price because my friend's father and girlfriend work at Disney (man, it's great to have friends in high places). There's a live performance every night. Acts such as Tyrese, Lil' Kim, Kevin Edmonds, Lox, and Rah Diggah (to name a few) are playing this weekend. It's like going to a mini concert without all the hassles of attending a sell-out concert.

There are a lot of great attractions here. If you like to dance, there are a few hot spots to check out:

8 Traxx (a 70s club) has great disco hits from the 70s, so put on your platforms, bell-bottoms, puff up your afro and get ready to boogie!!

Mannequins is a cool dance spot where the floor rotates. Be careful on that first step though (I suggest maybe hopping on so you don't fall.) The music was good, and you see people from many walks of life in this place.

If dancing isn't your cup of tea, don't worry, there are other attractions as well:

Comedy Warehouse: This is like an improv troupe where the audience participates and can conduct what the performers will act out - this was a lot of fun. The troupe that we saw was GREAT...very interactive with the audience, and the funny thing is, in one of their skits, I actually called a scene from a cartoon, and that's what they did. The way they looked, they could have been the Wonder Twins from the Superfriends, so I said (under my breath), "Wonder Twin powers, activate." Wouldn't ya know it, that's EXACTLY what they said!!!

Jazz Co. (I believe this is the name of the spot), is a nice, quaint area where you hear a live band perform some great jazz tunes. Tonight, the special guest was E.C. Scott, who was pretty good. She got the crowd going and made us laugh. She's almost a cross between Mother Love and Nell Carter (this is about the best description I can think of for her). But she was good.

Planet Hollywood (which I plan on visiting on Saturday - we didn't get a chance to go in tonight).

Make sure you have money because you will have to pay for food. There are concession stands and drinks range from $2.50 - $4 (shots) to $8 for regular drinks.

Of course, every night at midnight is New Year's Eve, so when the clock strikes twelve, get ready to sing Auld Lang Syne and watch a great fireworks display.

Well, a lot has changed in six years, and sometimes change can be a good thing. If you're into the club scene and dancing, Pleasure Island is a place you should visit. Tomorrow, we venture to Disney World for more fun filled adventure.
