Travel in Style!

I have been travelling by Via Rail since I was a very young child. My mom took me cross country, from the east coast of Canada, to the west coast, when I was just 6 years old. And I recently took my daughter (5 months old at the time) on her first train trip (22 hours aboard).
Well, granted the train is slow (dependant upon where you are travelling), but if you can spare the time, it is the way to travel.
The seats are comfortable and the staff are courteous. I find the trains to be clean, even the washrooms. You can get decent food to eat on the train, but it can sometimes be expensive. If you can, bring some of your own food (there is no restriction on this).
The trains now are also non-smoking which is great (except for the "bar car"). If you need a wheelchair, they have a special one that fits down the narrow aisle.
If you are travelling on a train that has a dome car, be sure to take advantage of it. The views are spectacular, especially along the east coast, and of course through the rockies. The prairies are kinda long and dull.
Finally the best part of train travel is the conversations you make with total strangers. Everyone seems to want to talk to you and you can have some interesting chats with people from all walks of life.
The best bonus to taking the train is that it is a relaxed way to travel. There is no worry about bad weather or traffic and you arrive to your destination rested.
Take the train!
