Kids in the Air

Jun 20 '00

Just over a year ago my wife and I moved overseas taking our three younger children with us. My wife had traveled by air with the kids before, but this was my first flight with them. Believe me, I was a bit nervous. From her experience, and from talking with others who had done this kind of thing before, we were able to make it a relatively painless experience. Here are some tips that I hope you will find useful:

Give them the window seat: Most kids love looking at the clouds, and
scenary, and even more, they love to watch the takeoffs and landings.

A small bit of dramamine (motion sickness medication), about half an
hour before takeoff, will make them sleepy.

Avoid giving them anything with caffeine or high sugar content before
the flight. This serves two purposes: 1) Less trips to the bathroom,
and 2) No sugar high to keep them hyper.

If you are on a long flight hopefully the can watch the inflight movie
with the headphones. If not, bring along a tape or cd player with
headphones.

Take a pillow with you. With the kids next to the window, they can
prop up a pillow and be alot more comfortable.

Have them bring a small bag or backpack with them. They love to be
like mom and dad and having their own carry-on makes them feel special.
(plus it keeps you from having to lug their toys around too).

I hope these tips are useful, have a wonderful flight.
