| Rocketgirl's Full Review: Denver Botanic Gardens |
If you are visiting the Mile High City, you must put the Denver Botanic Garden on your itinerary. If you are a gardener, or even if you're not, you will be amazed at the large variety and color of the plants grown here. The garden is a large, lovely place where it is nice to take a stroll, relax, sit on a park bench, or gaze into a water fountain.
Rather than being one large garden, the Denver Botanic Garden is actually divided into a multitude of individual themed gardens. There is the Rock Alpine Garden, the Water Gardens, a Japanese Garden, a Daylily Garden, a Rose Garden, an Herb Garden, and many more. The Japanese Garden is especially lovely with the wooden bridges, water lilies, and shrubs and trees overhanging the water. I also enjoyed the Water-Smart Garden, which had many exotic species of cactus and desert plants. A crowd favorite is the Conservatory, which houses tropical plants that have been useful to man as food, fiber, dye, etc. Inside are winding pathways that take you through the steamy conservatory. There are three levels of paths, so that you may see plants that grow at various levels of a jungle or tropical canopy. A fake banyan tree disguises an elevator that accommodates handicapped visitors to the upper two levels. A fake alligator swims in a pond. And of course, the flowers are gorgeous.
The garden is open all year round, with shorter hours and smaller fees in the winter. There is always something in bloom. The gardens have an outdoor amphitheater in which various productions are performed. There is also a gift shop, a library, herbarium, and a snack bar.
