White Water Rafting Down The Zambezi
Jan 17 '00
The Zambezi River is not for the faint of heart. I went during the time of year when the water was the roughest (August) for a 3-day trip.
I am not the most skilled or strongest person so I highly recommend that you make sure you have a few strong rowers in your boat. There were 7 people in my boat including the guide. The rapids were fierce and the boat almost tipped a few times but I made it through ok. The Zambezi is filled with hippos in many parts of the journey so caution is the key! At one point, our raft was in a whirlpool effect and one of the guys on the boat went to push off on a rock, but it wasn't a rock; it was a baby hippo and the hippo was not happy. They say more people are killed from hippo attacks than car accidents in Africa.
I believe my 3 day camping, rafting trip cost $300 dollars and I recommend Shearwater Adventures, but I believe there are a few other great companies as well. When you arrive in Zimbabwe at Victoria Falls you will hear which trips to take and which not to take.
