Do Not Miss The Osbornne Light Show

Feb 16 '00

If you have the supreme pleasure of visiting Walt Disney World During the Christmas season, you should not bypass the Osborne Family Spectacle of Lights at Disney MGM Studios.

I must start by saying that I am a Disney "addict" and that I love Christmas. My family had the pleasure of spending 4 nights in Disney World this last November prior to sailing on the Disney Magic. I was really looking forward to the opportunity to see the Osborne Light Show and had high expectations.

The show is staged on a backlot of the studios which is set up to look like a residential street in Anywhere, USA. The houses are just facades, but are very realistic looking. The history of the show, as I understand it is as follows. A family from Little Rock, Arkansas really got into decorating their house for Christmas. Every year they would add more and more lights and decorations to their display. Their display got so unbelievably huge that they were no longer allowed to have that many lights. The Osborne Family then donated the four million lights to Walt Disney World so that the rest of us could continue to see their show. The result is the most spectacular show of Christmas lights and decorations you could imagine.

Every night during the holiday season, right after sunset, the crowds are admitted into this little "neighborhood". I was prepared for something spectacular, after all this is Disney we are talking about. What I saw and heard that evening left me speechless. There were tears running down my cheeks. I could not believe how lucky I was to be walking down this "street" surrounded by my wonderful husband and four children and having my senses flooded by Christmas. I felt like the luckiest person on the face of the earth. All of my favorite Christmas songs were playing and the lights on each home were just amazing. There were small lights, big lights, animated lights, neon lights. Goofy, Chip & Dale, Mickey and Minnie were all there. There were some great photo opportunities that evening. There is just no way that any words I could use would do this show justice.

I highly recommend a visit to Disney World in the weeks between Thanksgiving and Christmas. The decorations throughout the entire complex are beautiful and the crowds are on the light side. When you do go, do not miss this event!!
