The Mohegan Sun was the second native Indian run casino in Connecticut and therefore has always been in the shadow of its biggest competitor, Foxwoods Resort and Casino. But this second fiddle has some big plans on the horizon.
The Future:
The Sun has just released plans for an 800 million-dollar expansion. These new additions will include a 20-story hotel, a 10,000-seat coliseum for boxing and other large events, shopping, dining and expanded gaming. This project is to be completed by the end of 2001 and will then enable the Mohegan’s to compete with the big boys by hosting world class events and allowing their patrons the convenience of staying on the Mohegan Sun’s reservation.
The Present:
Just because the Sun is currently smaller that its neighbor, it still has all the excitement and comfort of a world-class casino. The Sun has only be open for less than 5 years of operations and in that time they have been very successful in being small. When you first drive up to the entrance, you will see a difference. The décor is of Crossed pines, totem poles and classic Indian artwork. It has a warmer feel with the lighting and décor, than Foxwoods. The building is a large sphere, with gaming and restaurant around the exterior of the building and a entertainment/bar venue in the center. This is what separates it from Foxwoods, by constantly offering great entertainment for all to her and see, even if they don’t have a ticket for one of the top-notch shows. The theater is called the “Wolf Den” and is always rocking with some live entertainment.
There are also 5 very fine restaurants at the Sun. I have only eaten two of them, but both were very good. The oriental restaurant “Bamboo Forest” was excellent. The staff is friendly and you can use your Mohegan Sun Wampum card to pay for your diner. The card allows you to accumulate points by gambling. Any Sun guests can get on by signing up at the courtesy desk.
The gaming area is considerable smaller than Foxwoods at the present. But if you go during the week, you will usually find lower betting minimums at each table than Foxwoods. Unfortunately, since the gaming is all in one building, there is not a real smoke free area to gamble.
Location, Location, Location:
The Mohegan Sun is much easier to get to than Foxwoods. It is just off I-395, which is just off I-95 in Uncusville, Connecticut. This allow you to get there in minutes from the highway, while it will take you at least 15 minutes of Route 2 of I-95 to get to Foxwoods. The sun has ample parking and a large parking garage adjacent to the casino. You can also take advantage of the free valet parking, if you don’t mind a short wait when you want to leave.
Conclusion: A nice little casino tucked in the Connecticut woods. If you want less crowds, and a esthetically pleasing atmosphere without the big resort feel than you have two years until the addition to experience it. All bets are off, after the expansion.
