NO to Surf and Sun Tours!
Apr 22 '00
This is a warning to all college students looking to find a great deal on a Spring Break trip. When looking on the internet for such deals, you will undoubtedly come across a company called Surf and Sun Tours. This company is in the business of SERIOUSLY scamming students. They also go by the names College Tours, Island Tours, Sunplash Tours, Mexico Tours, and probably others. All these different names are THE SAME COMPANY, and are to be avoided AT ALL COSTS when shopping for cheap spring break travel.
Even though everything looks legit on their web site, and when you first talk to the company reps they really inspire confidence in you, as soon as you send them your money, you will not here from them for months. My roommates and I planned a trip to Mazatlan with them, and sent them $700 to arrange the travel, hotel accomodations, and special drink/food deals. This was in November '98 for a trip in March '99. We didn't receive our tickets, or ANY further info from the company until 2 days before our trip. When we got to the airport, we found that the plane was not there, and in fact was NEVER SCHEDULED to be there! A sleazy company rep (accompanied by 2 security guards) met with the approx. 70 angry students at the airport and told us our trip had been cancelled because there was no plane available, and that we would receive full refunds in 7 days. Dejected, we went home and were left dreaming about the spring break that could have been.
After 3 MONTHS of constant calling, waiting on hold, threatening with lawsuits, and being given the run around, my roommates and I FINALLY received our refunds. However, when I tried to cash my refund check, it bounced. I had an expletive-rich conversation with one of the inept phone-answerers after this, and he told me that the company had recently switched banks, etc. etc.
I am actually thankful now that we didn't end up going. I heard of numerous horror stories from other students who actually made it to Mexico using this company, and then found that they had no hotel and/or no flight home. And since they technically did go on the trip, it is a LOT more difficult to get a refund back, as we did.
The bottom line is, DO NOT trust ANY company specializing in spring break travel. The reason they are specializing in this is simply because they feel that college students can be easily scammed. Spend the extra $100 and go through a reputable travel agent. I really hate to think that these bastards will get another penny for ruining unsuspecting college students' spring breaks.
