You Look Like You Need a Drink

Dec 16 '00

(Alternate title: My 10 favorite places for a cocktail at WDW - I'm on vacation for goodness sakes!)

While I'm not advocating a week of partying and blackouts, a couple of cocktails can really take the edge off a day in the hot sun and the crowds. Send the kids to the Neverland Club or the teenagers to the parks by themselves and go have a drink - you'll like them so much better afterwards.

These are in no particular order and by no means a definitive list. They are just 10 at which I've had particularly nice times.

The Outer Rim Cocktail Lounge at the Contemporary Resort is located near Chef Mickey's and the shops. This is not a quiet, secluded place, but still very relaxing. There is a lovely view of Bay Lake and the Contemporary's pool and you can watch parasailing or the Electric Water Pageant at night as the monorail rumbles overhead.

The Territory Lounge at Wilderness Lodge is small, but reminiscent of a 50's mountain lodge -- you'll feel like it's winter in Montana. Take the boat over from the Contemporary dock and be sure to stroll the grounds and explore the lobby. It has arguably the best theme in WDW.

I love the Barefoot Bar at the Polynesian Resort Pool. Grab a drink and a cabana and gaze at Cinderella's Castle from across the lake - the view of the fireworks is magical at night.

The Dixie Landings pool bar called Muddy Rivers is great, too. The grounds at Dixie Landings are so pretty, and the pool theme is clever and imaginative. Your kids will be so thrilled with it that you can find yourself a nice place in the shade and relax.

The food at the Sci-Fi Dine-in gets alot a criticism, but you really don't need to go for a meal; it's a great place for a mid-day break. Stick the kids in the "back seat" with milkshakes and nachos for them and have yourself a nice cold one while you watch those great old movie trailers.

The Tune-In Lounge at the Disney Studios can be crowded and a little hectic, but if you can find a couple of seats at the bar, watch the old tv clips and "Mom", "Big Brother", and "Big Sister" humiliating the families as they are seated.

One of our all time favorite things to do is come into Epcot a few hours before dinner reservations and wander around listening to the live music that are in various countries. We get a glass of wine in France, and then are treated to all sorts of international offerings from a string quartet from Italy to Chinese musicians and acrobats.

I just love being in the Mexican pavillion - I forget where I am under that perpetual night sky in the beautiful marketplace, the volcano bubbling in the background. Go there, and you'll immediately feel like having one of their wonderful margaritas.

There is a little riverside place at Animal kingdom called Drinkwallah in Asia. I love to go there for a bloody mary in the late morning. This is sort of hidden from the beaten path and very peaceful, and the view of the tree of life and of Africa is so beautiful.

If you can get away to Downtown Disney, pop into Bongo's Cuban Cafe. I'm so into Latin American music, and I hardly ever get to hear it live. There are usually people dancing and, and although I am so jealous of their talent, I love watching.

Do I sound like a great big lush? - I hope not. All of these places would be just as nice for a soda and snack break, but as I've said, I'm on vacation! And it's hot! And I need a drink!
