Review Topic: Overview
Mohegan Sun is a very pretty casino. Unlike its mammoth neighbor, Foxwoods Mohegan Sun doesn't yet have its own hotel, though that is in the midst of construction right now and will be 37 stories tall when completed. There are many nearby hotels you can stay at, and most of them offer free shuttle service to and from the casino. Most local hotels also offer casino packages, so ask in advance before booking a room: you could benefit from a sizable discount.
Entering the casino with my 28 year old fiancee we were promptly carded by an i.d. checker. Nothing unusual in that. I've been carded at most, though not all, of the casinos I've been in. Never however have they spent so much time checking our licenses. We began to think they weren't going to let my fiancee in after a while. Once finally admitted inside we began cruising the slot machines. We weren't inside for 5 minutes when another casino employee asked to see our i.d. This surprised us since we'd already been checked and we'd never left the casino area. But we duly extracted our licenses from our wallets again and endured the probing stares of the i.d. checker.
Even though we arrived at 8 p.m. on Friday the casino was fairly empty. It didn't start filling up until 10:30 or so, but once it did it was nearly impossible to find a empty slot machine. Most of the casino's visitors were much older than us (no one our age seemed to be there that night). The casino has a variety of restaurants and fast food options. We ate at a very nice steakhouse where the maitre d' carded us! Why, I do not understand. It wasn't as if he was taking our drink order. He was merely being pompous, and given that this was the fifth time we'd been carded that night we were annoyed. Our waitress, Cindy, was very personable however and the food was good, though not stellar.
By midnight when we left we were agreed on two things: 1. Mohegan Sun is a lovely, spacious casino and 2. Getting carded 5 times in one evening is not how we wish to spend our time. The casino should distribute wristbands to younger persons who've already been checked (as they do in Harrah's in New Orleans). This way the employees aren't forever carding the same people. I was impressed by the non-smoking slot area (it's a great idea in casinos which typically make you feel like an emphysema victim within hours). Another problem with Mohegan Sun is the temperature. To disperse smoke and lower the temperature they employ high powered fans which can leave you freezing cold if you're not dressed appropriately. I recommend bringing something along with long sleeves to combat the cold.
Overall, Mohegan Sun was an adequate casino. Beautiful decor and convenient transportation couldn't outweigh the inconvenience of being carded 5 times or the rather chilly atmosphere. The gaming area gets quite crowded late at night, with busloads of seniors arriving well after 11 p.m. The free drink toting waitresses were so scarce that I never encountered one and only saw two throughout my tour of the casino. I wanted to like Mohegan Sun a lot, but having been to many other casinos it simply doesn't measure up.
