| elderberries's Full Review: Breast Pump |
I absolutely can't believe some of the comments I'm reading. This ad is being called disgusting? Coming from members of a society that likes to watch movies with people getting their faces kicked in by Wesley Snipes, and mobsters taking bullets in the face on shows like the Sopranos... a commercial with a breast pump is disgusting?? I'm appalled.
First off, there should be nothing unseemly about breast pumps. As a mother whose son has had problems breastfeeding from the beginning, I've had to resort to pumping everything I can to feed him. Since a pump doesn't do as much for your milk supply as a baby does, it requires very frequent, almost religious pumping, and massage (like that featured in the commercial) is often necessary to empty the breast, therefore getting your body to produce more. Those are medical facts. Is that disgusting? I certainly don't think that's any more so than the act of birth itself (now THAT has its disgusting moments), but we see labor and childbirth on TV all the time, and no one seems to complain. Is it because childbirth is beautiful, but feeding your child is not? I don't understand that thinking.
Second, an opinion on a breast pump is just as valuable as an opinion on a new computer. A woman's choice of pump makes a big difference in how well she expresses milk, and how much she can feed her child. Opinions on these kinds of products can be absolutely invaluable, especially considering the price of most good pumps, and the fact that they're non-returnable. Basically, what I'm trying to say is that there is a market for whom this kind of opinion would be immensely helpful (I wish I'd known about epinions.com before I bought my breast pump... I would have chosen differently). Why shouldn't epinions.com cater to that market? Just because you may not be in that market, should you lobby to have the commercial removed? Perhaps there are some men that think that tampon commercials shouldn't be allowed to air because they're too disgusting. Or what about senior citizens and their need for Depends? That's pretty disgusting, right? So maybe they should be forced to whisper about it behind closed doors, and god forbid someone makes a commercial about it.
Overall, I think the commercial is excellent. It tells me that this is a site where all opinions are welcome, be they mainstream or not. It makes me think that I'll find something on this site besides people simply rating cars, hotels, restaurants, and airlines. The woman on the commercial wasn't a spokesmodel. She didn't look like a company plant. She was comfortable with the pump, even to the point of answering the door with it and not being embarrassed (and believe me, after pumping 10 times a day, it becomes as much a part of your life as brushing your teeth). Whose opinion could be more valuable than a person who really knows the product?
To make a long rant a little shorter (too late for that, it appears! *g*)... I simply feel that this commercial, while perhaps having a narrow audience, does a fine job of conveying the "anything goes" atmosphere of epinions.com. And as to the fact that so many seem to find its frankness to be unsettling, or even "disgusting"... I'm saddened.
