.......My Mind Wanders.......What is the Commercial For?

Written: Apr 26, 2000

Pros:Clear voice, Works Quickly, Grills on both sides...oh there goes my mind wandering
Cons:Talking Belly Buttons is old Material, my mind wanders......

Right off, I am going to say this commercial left me feeling indifferent. I was not laughing, although I am sure others might have been. I wasn't offended, but I really can't say this would have me running to Epinions to check out the fuss. It was just another commercial. Not bad, not good--it just didn't impress me.

Scott's voice is very clear in this ad and that is a plus. We find out Scott is doing a commercial for Epinions.Com and in so doing this he is telling us about the George Foreman Grill. He mentions this grill comes normally from an infomercial. He knows that we are thinking it probably doesn't work as anything that comes from an infomercial seldom does. He goes on to say it is healthy as it does drain out the fat. He says it works quickly and grills from both sides. Overall--he states, it actually works. We also get a visual of this grill and I can see it is small. That kind of helps fill us in on what Scott doesn't say about this grill.

To grab our attention--and get us to pay attention to this commercial--he changes his voice while his belly has a conversation with us. Apparently, his belly button has just eaten a hamburger as it is claiming that it is a "good hamburger." Later another faceless person comes into the skit and we now have two talking bellies in the ad. This one just mentions the price of $40 and declares that Scott's belly really needs this grill. This almost would bring a chuckle if it weren't old material.

Now this ad didn't offend me but I can just picture my three boys running around making sounds from their bellies. I am kind of distracted away from the fact this is supposed to be an ad for Epinions.Com. I focus more on the grill than Epinions. Yes, you see the words Epinions.Com, but I am not sure if it really registers with me. I think this would get the attention of the younger set but overall it just seems like the ads are getting sillier and sillier. I don't know--like I said, I am very indifferent with this one.

Scott does a good job about getting the word out about the grill, I just don't find many leaping up out of their chairs and sofa's to log onto Epinions.Com. We really should be using newer techniques to catch the viewers attention, not material we have seen before. Talking belly buttons remind me of other shows I have seen but I certainly wouldn't connect them with Epinions. Of course, that is just my Epinion. Epinions.Com--You can do better!
