Mr. Bun Bun is not completely sure what to think about the "Breast Pump" commercial. It certainly does grab the audience's attention and it seems that the woman critiquing the "breast pump" is not in it for gags. I appreciate the seriousness with which the mother is treating the topic of breast feeding.
HOWEVER, it seems clear that the creators of the commercial (call them the producers, directors, ad execs, eopinions suits, what have you) wanted some shock value. I'm a bit wary of the thinking behind this commercial.
It was unnecessary for the woman to answer the door while using the breast pump. It was obvious that this was a ploy for shock value and "entertainment". The female body is already seen as a rich target for advertising and it occupies a troubling space : American society seems both fascinated with and disgusted by aspects of the female anatonomy ESPECIALLY when it comes to breasts, breast feeding, and the concept of motherhood.
The reason I'm giving this commerical 3 stars is because it touches on a taboo subject and gives a public space to a cloistered subject : female anatanomy and sexuality (because we all know that a woman generally doesn't get pregnant without having s-e-x). However, I cannot give it more than 3 stars. The crux of the commercial relies on a deeply ingrained prejudice: the idea of the female body as grotesque -- "Breast feeding is just gross!"
It certainly is a "unique" commercial. I wouldn't be surprised if it went for a Clio Award (advertising commercial awards).
