About Greatpilgrim
|
April 2008: I finally did it - I made a new drop-down catalogue of all my book reviews, thanks to panguitch's generous bequeathing of his profile code. (In the spirit of confession, these are not ALL my book reviews. I left off the ones of which I am heartily ashamed in retrospect.)
Other than updating the reviews (mostly from 2001) which had wonky symbols like little worms all throughout the core instead of punctuation, I have not changed or edited the old reviews; they are as they were when written by a dumb know-it-all 14-year-old. Massive overhauls are on the list of to-dos for the future; in the meantime, enjoy and be kind to the ghost of my past self :).

February 2007 I've been in.....Vancouver. *Clickety clickety backspace backspace backspace.*
Actually, I've just been taking a vacation (for far too long) from Epinions and getting a handful of degrees during my downtime. Right now, I'm in the graduate program for Masters of Music in Piano Performance and Piano Pedagogy, circa April 2009. I also have a FWS job that basically involves sitting at a computer for 12 hours a day doing whatever the heck I want, as long as I'm manning the computer lab. That equation equals boredom...unless you've got Epinions!
But this seems to coincide nicely with Epinions' new 10 for 10 deal. I'll be writing new reviews whenever the muse allows, and will try to keep them at the same level of quality you've come to expect from Greatpilgrim. ;)
Thanks to everyone who's stuck by me and hasn't deleted me from their WOT. I really appreciate the kind words and comments from faces old and new here. (Erm, not saying anyone's old...). Did I mention, I really really really LOVE comments? I'm very very bad about replying, I'd make a terrible author in real life because I just can't think of witty replies, but I read every single comment with a smile on my face. (Unless it's mean. Then I clean my computer's keyboard with my tears.)
Oh yeah, if you haven't already, sign up for email alerts for whenever I publish new reviews. If you haven't noticed already, the new review section is cah-RAZY busy lately and it's easy to miss your faves in the deluge of SH reviews.
I'm going to be overhauling this profile page soon - it's showing its age (eek!) and I'm tired of looking at it anyways. So, ya know, be on the lookout.

Hello and welcome to my profile page! Glad you stopped by! I'm Greatpilgrim, Victoria in real life, and on this page you can see what I'm all about, read my opinions, meet some Epinionators, and check out these awesome graphics. ;-) So have fun, and fare well wherever you fare.
Getting Started
If you read just one of my epinions, read this one, my Lord of the Rings review. It's the one review so far that I can't believe I've written. I could never pick a favorite, but this one comes close. I don't want to hurt the feelings of my other reviews, though, so I'm not going to say it out loud :-)
Help! I have to read a CLASSIC!
For a classics freak like myself, there's nothing more delightful than sitting down on a long afternoon with a good book in hand. For someone who's been assigned to read a really thick, boring-looking book (or comes across one in the library), it can be a nightmare. I'm here to help! I mostly review classic books, so scan through my reviews and see what you can find. Murasaki also writes excellent classics reviews. Here's a couple websites that are awesome literature sites for both students and book lovers:
Bibliomania!
Sparknotes
I'll be putting more helpful classics stuff up just for you in the future. Meanwhile...
Love Books and Writing Epinions? Check this out!
I have just started my very own Yahoogroup! Entitled "Book Epinions," this group is to encourage book reviewers who'd like to get some more hits as well as to meet other booklovers and find some great recommendations for new reading material! You can publish a review on anything in this group (it doesn't just have to be a book review link), but I do ask that you have at least 15 book reviews with an average rating of Helpful or better. This group is going to be a lot of fun, so why not join? You can apply by sending me an email at greatpilgrim@yahoo.com with your Epinions ID, and for the whole scoop on this group, visit the website at Book_Epinions - the official website!
Lord of the Rings, Your Official Guide
A quick prowl around my reviews will reveal that I am a very devoted Lord of the Rings fan. (I will proudly admit that I am one of those "geeks" that goes to the movies in costume, in my case a very beautiful Arwen dress that my mom and I made.) Thus, this is your own stop shopping for LOTR-related reviews. Scroll down a bit to check out my drop-down menu of Lord of the Rings reviews.
Dueling rivals on this page? "Ditch the elf or die!"
Who am I? I am - surprise surprise - really into books! I get on little kicks where I'll review different products and categories, but I always seem to come back to books every time. I'm a teen who enjoys reading and writing a lot, as well as music (I'm a classical pianist), movies (I like the old classics), and researching my latest kick.
What do I review? Anything that my fingers feel like reviewing. I don't just review books and music, though I probably should if I want to keep my recent Top Reviewer status! Especially this time of year, where I get so many new products to review. I think my next one will be an editorial...who knows?
How did I get all these cool pictures and fonts? I got the markup code from two of Jag2112's excellent articles on profile pages, Part I and Part II. I got the beautiful illustrations from a wonderful artist named John Howe who illustrates scenes from Tolkien. Figures.

My Reviews
(Products with stars by them **like this** are ones that are my alltime favorites. That isn't to say the others aren't good, but the starred ones are the best of the best.)

My "Most Helpful" Peoples Although we do have the Web of Trust there to tell the world who our favorite authors are, there are certain people who really stand out...
jsgoddess - discovered through a great review of a Robin McKinley book, this book reviewer has a subtly hilarious style, and her titles are always a hoot! She always seems to review "my" types of books. Give her a try.
Redlass - this well-read gal is a bit infrequent at writing lately but her reviews are always awesome and are often book reviews (yay!). She recently earned a Category Lead in Books, a position she most definitely deserves!
Lifestar - he joined on almost exactly the same day in the same year that I did, so how could I not like him? :-) Anyway, a wonderful, down-to-earth reviewer and a really nice guy. He's starting to explore the books category too.
Any questions about Epinions? (Well, at least any questions except about the new ranking system.) Highly helpful material here! I've written a number of editorials about Epinions, some of which I consider to be my best articles ever. They're definitely worth a look:
Building your web of trust: Help! I'm an Epinions guttersnipe and nobody trusts me! What is the web of trust: Web of Trust Crash Course: an idiot's guide to WOT's going on Deciding how to rate reviews: The greatest crime at Epinions are you guilty?<
Updates
I'm in the process of updating all my old reviews. I have revised the two of the earliest epinions I wrote, I'd love for you to check them out and rate them.
Uh, no thanks - I'll go for Dear America Tallulah? Riona? My kind of names!
And since I check these epinion daily and there aren't a lot of hits on it, you'll be sure to get noticed!
Let Epinions help you keep track of my reviews with their email notification system. If you want to be notified of my new reviews and editorials, click here.
Email Policy: I welcome most emails and will do my best to answer them. If you have a question about how I rated your review, feel free to email me about it. However, be prepared for an honest reply, and don't be offended if I tell you exactly what I think of your review. I strive to be nice aobut it, though. :-) Hate mail is respectfully declined and will not be answered. I love getting any other kind of email from fellow Epinionators, especially any small friendly notes for no good reason!
Web of Trust policy: I like to learn more about each person who trusts me. If you decide to place me on your Web of Trust, I will visit your profile page and read five of your latest articles. However, I will not trust you just because you trust me. If I love your writing, I will trust you. Simple as that.
The Magic Carpet Write/off Well my very first write/off is over, and while some site bugs during posting time threw things for a loop a bit, the reviews were awesome and the topics as wild as a child's imagination! These are great suggestions for parents and educators looking for some creative and stimulating summer activities for their kids. Check out the website for links to all the reviews that have been published so far. And thanks to everyone who participated!
The Magic Carpet Write/off Page
About me:Just a FL teen crazy about books, reading, writing, and music. That's basically my life in the summer - I read books for the first time or for the upteenth time; I spend about two hours a day on my piano, composing or practicing; and I write reviews.
My favorite categories to review here at Epinions are books, movies, music, and member advice, but occasionally I'll break out of the rut and do a spontaneous review in another category.
I really miss the "Favorites" lists from the old Epinions, and I hope to be putting up a modified version here on my member profile soon. In case you're mildly curious, I love music, Star Wars, Broadway, books, writing, Jesus, names, and learning. Thanks for dropping by! Namaarie
