Retired Army Officer ~ Organic gardener ~ Civil libertarian ~ Vegetarian ~ Curmudgeon.

Things I like:
Lilacs in bloom. Unexpected checks arriving in the mail. Homegrown tomatoes. Perfect spring days before the grass is high enough to mow; perfect autumn days after the grass has stopped growing. Mockingbirds. Arriving home and having my dog act ecstatic to see me. Garden snakes, lizards and skinks; ladybugs and orb weavers in my garden. A perfect cup of coffee on the back porch at the start of a cold spring day. Computers with high-speed internet connections. Puddles. Re-reading favorite books.

Things I could live without:
Ticks, fleas, flies, chiggers and mosquitoes. Telemarketers, junk mail, and people who sell door-to-door (including those "selling" religion). Flat tires. "Perfect" lawns full of toxic chemicals; people who let their children play on those lawns. TV ads for make-up, household cleaners, and "intimate products" starring smiling, vacuous females with anorexia. Barbara Walters Specials. Spam (both kinds). John Grey; Fred Phelps; Fabio; Martha Stewart; Laura Schlessinger. "Guy movies" with obligatory chase scenes and wrecked cars; "chick flicks" with obligatory gabfests and tears. Tell-All books. Litter. Career politicians. Thomas Kinkade so-called "art". Kids who drive cars with the radio cranked up all of the way and the windows open. Balding men who act like teenagers. Daytime TV. "Reality" programs that bear no resemblance to any reality we know.

Ed Johnston's miscellaneous discoveries:
  • If you talk a lot, you are bound to say something wise occasionally.
  • Although honesty is the best policy, insanity may be the best defense.
  • It is a waste of time to try to sell answers to a man who wants to buy echoes.
  • About 99% of poor writing represents poor thinking.

Ada's Addendum: You can't have everything. It's hard to play strip poker in a nudist colony.

Things to ponder on a rainy day :
  • Exactly what flavor is "bubble gum" flavor?
  • How fast DO hot cakes sell?
  • Who is Pete, and why would I do anything for the love of him?
  • If a brain surgeon marries a rocket scientist, will their kids be really, really smart?
  • If the voices in my head are not real, how do they come up with such good ideas?
  • From the Epinions Status Board: "Members may have experienced redemption problems during the month of September." (Well, I knew some people were religious about Epinions...)

About My WOT
I add people to my WOT because they are good writers, they are thorough, and I am interested in the subjects they write about. I try to get to everyone on my WOT at least once a week to see what they have been up to. I don't promise to read every article written by people on my WOT, but I DO read every article that I rate. My WOT will never feature Casts of Thousands, because I can't read that fast!

Don't expect me to add you to my WOT because you have added me. I prefer to read and watch new people for a while before I decide whether to trust them. If you add me to your WOT, then drop me when I don't trust you back - I will never trust you! Of course, I do not expect you to add me to your WOT, or even read my reviews, just because I have added YOU. (That should go without saying, but some people need it spelled out, I suppose.)

About My Block List
I don't have one. Really! Epinions does not allow us to display our block lists, and I prefer to do things out in the open . I probably would have a block list if we had a "Display" option, or if members could see who has them blocked. As it is, I've seen too many instances of "Community Blockage" by people who hide in the dark, safe in the knowledge that there's no way the "blockee" can determine who has blocked them from public view. I don't do things that way, and I have nothing but contempt for the people who do.

I Will Never:

..Ask you why you don't "Trust" me. Ask you why you "trust"/don't "trust" someone else. Ask you about your criteria for "Trust". Your Trust List is your own business.

..Answer any of the questions above about my Trust List. My list is my business.

..Get upset over an honest rating. If my write-up is not Very Helpful to you, don't rate it that way! I value honesty, and I don't mind the "hard raters" if they are consistent.

..Rubberstamp an Epinion without reading it. I may read it and not rate it, but if I rate it, I've read it. (Maybe not every last word of the ingredients list, though.)

My Qualifications:

It seems that lots of people who write for Epinions have some impressive qualifications, which they list on their respective homepages. In the spirit of proper disclosure, I decided that I should list mine. It is only fair. So I sat back, took a good long look at my own background and experience.

Oh, let's see. I read books and write a book review now and again, but am I really "qualified" to do so? Alas, no. I am not a writer, publisher, editor, journalist, .. or even a bookbinder. I'm embarrassed to admit that I do nothing with books at all except buy and read them.

And the Home and Garden stuff. I am, I must admit, an indifferent housekeeper and an infrequent cook. I should be shot for writing reviews of either household cleaning products or cookbooks. There are so many people at Epinions who are experts in this area, that I feel positively ashamed that I have even posted stuff in this area. Please feel free to ignore all of my H&G reviews, and just go on to the others.

Online Stores! Hey, I shop at online stores! A lot! Well – "a lot" is really relative. I certainly cannot claim any expertise at online shopping. Or offline shopping. I must reluctantly admit that I shop from necessity and not as a sport. I don't shop for fun, because I don't like shopping. No qualifications here.

**SIGH** So what else is there? Electronics and computers? I have been out of the programming/computer field for several years. Kids and Family? Don't have them. Pets? Ditto. Travel? Not any more. Movies? Watch them, but am mostly clueless about the making, and know even less about the current crop of acting talent.

I've concluded that I truly have no expertise in anything at all. In fact, I am so devoid of expertise that I feel guilty for using up space on Epinions for my ramblings. I should really be paying Epinions for letting me stay around here.

Here's a picture of me.
It's a little outdated, but I haven't changed much in a half century or so.
Really. I haven't!

How I rate.
As fairly as can. I rate an opinion on how well I think it answers questions I have/would have on a product. I do not rate based on whether I agree or disagree with the opinion. I admit to rating an opinion higher if it is fun to read, but that is not a requirement. I don't often give NH ratings, but will if the opinion is plagiarized; doesn't talk about the product; is written by someone who obviously never used the product; or is just a rant about something/someone instead of a product review. I leave comments. Revenge ratings don't bother me- be my guest! I actually read every epinion I rate; I don't rubberstamp or join rating circles.

You Are a "Don't Tread On Me" Libertarian

You distrust the government, are fiercely independent, and don't belong in either party. Religion and politics should never mix, in your opinion... and you feel opressed by both. You don't want the government to cramp your self made style. Or anyone else's for that matter. You're proud to say that you're pro-choice on absolutely everything!

All of the voices in my head agree:

Your Brain's Pattern
Your mind is a multi dimensional wonderland, with many layers.
You're the type that always has multiple streams of thought going.
And you can keep these thoughts going at any time.
You're very likely to be engaged in deep thought - and deep conversation.
