About avepythagoras
|
Some Selected Notes Concerning avepythagoras:
I am a self-inflicted professional student, zoologist and mathematician. Currently, I am studying bioinformatics and molecular evolution at the University of Florida. Which basically means I am spending 5-7 years of my life working feverishly on one particular topic. This, of course, goes against my prime directive, as I generally get distracted by shiny objects and am prone to change fields of study frequently.
I generally spend my free time reading. Usually science-fiction, but I have been known to dabble in more literary works. Hence, most of my reviews are books. Which makes it easy that way.
Favorite Books:
The Unbearable Lightness of Being, Milan Kundera
Snow Crash, Neal Stephenson
Pattern Recognition, William Gibson
Lanark: A Life in Four Books, Alasdair Gray
Foucault's Pendulum, Umberto Eco
How I rate science-fiction:
One-Star: Horrible. I am ashamed for even reading these books. You'll find them under my bed gathering dust if I haven't shot them with paintball guns or used them to start fires. I don't normally give books this rating, so if I do, it means they really suck. Examples: X-Wing: Rogue Squadron; Left Behind.
Two-Stars: Below average. Has some moments, but really not worth it. Avoid if possible. Generally, I won't even consider rereading these books. I'll still put these on my bookshelf. Examples: The Caves of Steel, All Tomorrow's Parties.
Three-Stars, not recommended: Average with some minor flaws or irritating moments. Books I'll read again if I'm bored or have nothing better to read. Examples: Ringworld, Timothy Zahn's Star Wars Novels
Three-Stars, recommended: Average, worth reading. The bulk of my reading experience. Most of my reviews will have this rating. Or at least should. Examples: Foundation, Neuromancer.
Four-Stars: The good stuff, worth reading and having on the shelf. I usually reread these novels when I have the chance. Examples: 2001: A Space Odyssey, Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?
Five-Stars: These are the must haves, the little gold nuggets in an otherwise rocky stream. I love these books. They should be read by everyone. I am devoted to these novels and preach the gospel of their existence. A worthy addition to any bookshelf. Examples: Snow Crash, Dune.
Note: I haven't written reviews for all the examples I have provided, but I should have them done soon. Or at least I hope.
And because these darned quizes can be fun:
