My name is Greg, and I am a watchaholic.
Actually, I'm more of a watch enthusiast. My interest in wristwatches began in earnest during the mid 1990's when I realized that the watch was like any other men's "accessory". I didn't wear the same tie or same pair of shoes everyday, so why should I wear the same watch everyday? The spark of obsession was ignited.
At some point, I thought watch collecting would be a fun and unique hobby, and I made a few purchases of "vintage" watches. I soon came to realize that I didn't want to buy a watch for its looks or historical value just to have it sit in some display box. If I bought a watch, I wanted to wear it and admire it. By the way, I've heard (and I believe) that wristwatches are an awful investment.
After a lot of purchasing and selling of watches, mostly on the internet, I decided that I needed to find "the" watch for me. Kind of like the "one" ring of power. Sure, I could sell off my collection and settle on a really nice watch, but that just sounded too boring. Much of my enthusiasm for watches comes from owning and researching various models. Variety is the spice of life, after all.
The day Epinions added a watch category was one of the most exciting days in recent memory.
I currently have a collection of about 15 watches, ranging in price from $20 on up to $900. My favorite watch is the one currently on my wrist...I find something to like about each one. My favorite brands include Oris, Titoni, Davosa, D. Freemont, Zodiac and Seiko.
The watch industry is a lot like the automotive industry, where new models are offered each year with improved looks and/or technology. You can argue that with many companies, you may be paying a premium for the name of the brand (think Rolex and Mercedes Benz) instead of a superior product.
Anyway, I am also obsessed with cars, rather, researching cars. I love to read about the latest and greatest offerings. I can't wait to research and purchase my next car, whatever it turns out to be.
Speaking of enthusiasm, I really enjoy going to the gym. I started running a couple of years ago and I love the physical intensity and mental stamina (or is that mental intensity and physical stamina?) required. My approach to exercise is one of variety: I believe in mixing up my routine with weight lifting, running, participating in classes like body pump and using cardio equipment.
If you've read this far--thank you.
Happy watch hunting!
