About bobnewman
|
Award-winning author of 18 books on flyfishing, hunting, outdoor skills, and military science. One of my more recent books (1998) is Flyfishing Structure: The Flyfisher's Guide to Reading and Understanding the Water (Sycamore Island Books; www.sycamoreisland.com), which was selected by Sporting Classics magazine as one of the "Great Sporting Books of 1998," and which Lefty Kreh refered to as "A landmark book!" My most recent release is the Saltwater Angler's Guide to the Southeast: Flyfishing and Light Tackle in the Carolinas and Georgia (Wilderness Adventures Press; www.wildadv.com; signed copies available from the publisher). Some of my other books include North American Fly-Fishing (Menasha Ridge Press; www.menasharidge.com), Wilderness Wayfinding: How to Survive in the Wilderness As You Travel (Paladin Press; www.paladin-press.com; this popular book is used in Marquette University's Voyageurs Program), Guerrillas in the Mist: A Battlefield Guide to Clandestine Warfare (Paladin Press), and many others.
Magazine and webzine articles I have had published now number in excess of 1,300 and have appeared in such periodicals as Field & Stream, Sports Afield (before it self-destructed), Sport Fishing, Salt Water Sportsman, American Survival Guide, Soldier of Fortune (contributing editor for Gulf War Veterans' Affairs), Mountain Bike, Rescue, Tide, and dozens of others. I am the Rocky Mountain regional editor and "Structure" columnist for Fly Fish America (www.flyfishamerica.com; a contributing editor for Fly Fishing in Salt Waters (www.flyfishinsalt.com); the "Tactical Angler" and "On The Fly" columnist, and executive editor for fishbelly.com; and the "Fish Files" and "Angling Destinations" columnist for Raytheon Marine's boaters.com.
I travel widely, which means in much of Europe, Central America, the Middle East, the Far East, Australia, the Pacific, Canada, Africa, England (the British claim they are not Europeans), Mexico, and all over the US.
I'm a retired U.S. Marine who spent 20 years in the grunts, Recon (para-frog), and in various instructor billets including SERE Instructor (Survival-Evasion-Resistance-Escape) at the Navy SERE Course in Maine, and as the chief warfighting instructor in the Advanced Course at the Staff Noncommissioned Officers Academy at Camp Lejuene. In the Gulf War I was the Weapons Platoon Sergeant for Weapons Platoon, Fox Co., 2nd Battalion, 4th Marines.
I am now a full-time outdoor writer, flyfishing expedition leader, and flyfishing instructor/speaker. I have taught/presented for The Orvis Company, L.L. Bean, the International Sportsmen's Expositions, Trout Unlimited, and the Federation of Fly Fishers.
I am available for private (individual, group, and corporate) flyfishing/casting instruction, and I lead flyfishing adventures for small groups to many of the world's best freshwater and saltwater destinations. If you and/or some friends want to go on a flyfishing expedition to one of the world's top locales, send me an e-mail. My consulting and travel fees are very reasonable, and you will absolutely find yourself in an amazing place with lots of large fish around you.
Insofar as my reviews go, I will be honest, hopefully funny when I mean to be funny, and occasionally sarcastic, but I am only trying to lighten things up when it comes to the latter, such as my loathing of Alanis Morissette and Men's Journal. You can always count on accuracy with my opinions.
