About My So-Called Writing Career

I used to write quite a lot for the UK Small Press (I always prefer the name Independent Press - it just sounds better!!), though I don’t write much for it nowadays. Mostly fiction (sci-fi and literary) and poetry with the occasional article and even illustration thrown in. I’ve lost my definitive record of what magazines etc I’ve been published in (clever, that), but here are the ones I remember…

These are the magazines I’ve been published in:

Visions (Sci-fi / Fantasy / Horror Fiction)
Espylacopa (Esoteric Humour)
Writers’ Express (Literary Fiction)
Reach (Poetry)
Voice & Verse (Poetry)
Zest (Sci-Fi Fiction & Poetry)
Lochs (Esoteric Humour)
Lateral Moves (Humour, Fiction, Poetry)
Quantum Leap (Poetry)
Garbaj (Fiction, Humour, Poetry)
Monomyth (Sci-Fi Fiction)
Eclipse (Poetry)
Various quarterly journals published by TPP Press (Poetry)

And here are the books:

The Association of Small Press Poets Anthology
The Peoples’ Poet Anthology 2003 (was also one of the five selecting panellists for this one)
The Peoples’ Poet Anthology 2004
The Peoples Poem (Not actually sure what this one is called – it’s a collection of 100 poems from 100 authors who also write for The Peoples’ Poet)

My work will be appearing sometime soon in:

TPP Book of Love Poetry
TPP Book of Funny Verse
TPP Book of Wicked Verse

I did self-publish a couple of books a while back, but such copies I had printed have been sold (and that’s not many!) and there’s not much point in getting any more done now. I don’t have the time or inclination to produce and market them myself, and there doesn’t seem to be much danger of them every getting published – apart from on epinions!

Member Advice

These are my articles I've written to help members (mainly new ones, but not necessarily) to make the most of their stay at epinions, and to share what I laughingly call my wisdom...

CaptainD’s Guide to Epinions – Third Edition - a general guide to epinions, what it is, how to be a success here, etc.

CaptainD’s Guide to Writing A Really Bad Review - self-explantory really - what not to do when you're writing a review!

CaptainD’s Guide to Building a WOT - What is a WOT? How do you build one? And why should you? All is revealed...

The Ten Commandments of Epinions - well okay, there are 11 - things that'll help you be a success and most of all enjoy being part of the epinions community.

CaptainD's Guide to Hosting A Write Off - everything you ever wanted to know about hosting a WO (apart from anything I've forgotten...)

CaptainD's Guide to Joining A Write Off - everything you ever wanted to know about joining a WO...

You need a personality to begin with to develop one on epinions... - all you need to know about "developing" an epinions personality...

CaptainD’s Guide to Writing A Very Helpful Movie Review - written after 79 VH movie reviews (hopefully more by the time you read this...)

CaptainD's Guide to Writing a Very Helpful Book Review - the same as above for books, only much more detailed.

CaptainD's Guide to Writing a Very Helpful Game Review - does exactly what it says on the tin...

J R R Tolkein

The Professor created one of the most mind-boggingly detailed fantasy worlds of all time, Middle Earth, and set in it one of the most truly epic stories ever told, Lord of the Rings. Of course before this he wrote a story for his children, The Hobbit , which I enjoyed as a child (though not quite as much as an adult). To my mind however, his most amazing accomplishment was a book written after but set before both of those books. It is a truly amazing work of fiction, in fact it transcends mere story-telling – Tolkein created a complete mythology with more heroes, villains, and feats of courage than you can shake a stick at - The Silmarillian.

Of course, a whole new generation has been introduced to Lord of the Rings via Peter Jackson’s excellent films - The Fellowship of the Rings, The Two Towers (the best of the three, IMHO), and The Return of the King (which was very good – but should have been even better!). Overall I think Tolkein would have been pretty happy if he’d had the opportunity to watch these films – and that’s just about the biggest compliment you could possibly pay them.

Of course, the phenomenal success of the book Lord of the Rings has been bought at a price – there have been numerous humorous side-swipes at it, Bored of the Rings (created by the same guys who formed National Lampoon) probably being the most well-known. At least, until now – for my own series “Lord of the Things is gaining power and will soon take over the world… bwahahahahahahahahaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa… (or maybe, just maybe… not).

In the (hopefully) near future this series will be completed, and I will also be adding information about 2 more of my favourite authors - Terry Pratchett and Isaac Asimov - so watch this space!
