About collin_ong
My friends always consult me when buying electronics, computers, cars, cameras, etc., so I keep me up to date on consumer products. Epinions lets me share my knowledge and opinions beyond my immediate friends.

I graduated from UC Berkeley in Electrical Engineering/Computer Science, and work in technical marketing at a large computer firm, so I have the technical background to understand product tradeoffs and the marketing savvy to cut through the hype.

I am an avid reader, and my hobbies center around my love for storytelling. Books and movies feed this love, and my reviews reflect this bias through a focus on story, plot, and thematic development . To tell my own stories, I've developed skills in photography and digital video. My PowerMac serves as my central tool for these activities. However, I use Windows PCs everyday at work, so I'm very familiar with the other platform.)

My job has the wonderful side benefit of allowing travel to many places. I love travelling to strange places, experiencing its essence on foot, and trying to capture part of its life in a photo.

Please check out my web page on DV news for advice on digital video camcorders and editing.

I also maintain a buyer's guide for family radios (FRS).

ABOUT MY RATINGS:

I grade hard to counter ratings inflation, considering both quality, my degree of agreement and the following guidelines:

- Highly Recommended: Well-written, organized, and containing a description/synopsis, why somebody would want it, strengths and weaknesses, and a conclusion. Should show understanding with some key insight into the item. For books and movies, interpretation of the themes and plot is key. Additional things help get a Highly Recommended rating: comparisons with similar products, useful URLs for reference, areas for improvement, performance appraisals.

- Recommended: Has some good sections or insights, but is not complete overall. Generally, I should agree with it as well.

- Somewhat Recommended: I may agree with the opinion, but it is not particularly well-written, organized, or in-depth. Or, it may have some good qualities, but I disagree with the author.

- Not Recommended: A few cursory sentences dashed off without much thought or organization. Compounded if I disagree.

ABOUT MY WEB OF (dis)TRUST:

I'm stingy about trusting or distrusting. I trust people I agree with who write reviews I would rate Highly Recommended. I usually don't distrust a person unless they demonstrate practices bad for the Epinions community, like retaliatory ratings, blanket trusting, etc.
