I just have to say a few words about the Colts. I've lived in Indianapolis over 20 years now and I have never felt the electricity and excitement that has been in the air in the final days before the Super Bowl. When I walked into the library branch near me, they were handing out strands of blue and white beads. (My first thought was Mardi Gras.) If football fever has reached librarians, you KNOW the city is psyched!
Although I am far from a football fan, I did watch the Colts play the Patriots 2 weeks prior to the Super Bowl. It was a fantastic game. And, that's what I like: a good game. I am not per se a Colts fan although I AM a Peyton Manning fan.
Do you want to know why I am a Peyton Manning fan? It's not because he is so talented, even though I know he is. It's because he is an athlete that kids can look up to. He is a clean-cut, well-bred gentleman. A role model we can all look up to. He is a hero. He isn't a murderer like another athlete we know, he's never been arrested like other athletes, he's never urinated in a public place like another athlete, and he's never worn pantyhose in any of his many endorsements like another athlete we know.
Peyton is consistently stable, well-spoken and level-headed. I'm so glad he won Most Valuable Player. He deserved it. I had my eye on him when he first joined the Colts as this pimply-faced kid. Living here in Indianapolis, I had access to the local news about Peyton. There was a lot of pressure on him in the beginning. Month after month went by and it seemed the city was on bated breath - nobody wanted to say anything bad about him; everyone wanted to give him enough time to show his stuff. In time, he came through.
Tonight, it's 3 degrees outside. Fans are downtown in the streets partying; some with their shirts off. Tomorrow, schools are on a 2-hour delay and some, maybe most businesses are closed. Nobody is going to have any brainpower left to work tomorrow. Fireworks went off in my neighborhood and probably many other neighborhoods. The city really needed this and I am happy for them.
Some years ago, people in Indy referred to the Colts as the Dolts. The Colts have come a long way since then. They have a great coach, Tony Dungy and greatly improved players.
But the man of the hour is Peyton Manning. The sports world really needed a male role model for kids (and even some adults) to emulate. Congratulations Peyton, you are the most valuable player in my book too.

One of the things I used to do several years ago was take flying lessons. I have 29 ½ flight hours logged. How much fun was that? Lots! Ive got hanger stories that would curl your toes. Like the time my motor died and the propeller stopped turning. Or the time there were two coyotes on the runway as I was landing. Yes, those were the days.
My thumb is green so I like to garden (when Im on the ground, literally). I plant tomatoes, zucchini, Italian parsley, basil, cozzelle (Italian squash), whatever. I love to cook and bake but do it mostly in the wintertime. Its too hot to cook in the summer.
I've written an article and took photos for Organic Gardening Magazine. Both were accepted for publication. I also won one of their pun contests.
I've also been a contributing writer and photographer for The Greenwood Gazette and the Challenger newspapers here in Indiana.
Most of my letters to editors have been published in various magazines and newspapers. One columnist published my letter to him in his column. This was in the Lexington Courier newspaper.
I love newsletters and have done volunteer work for various publications. I've also written, photographed, designed and published my own newsletter.
I've done technical writing for Eli Lilly and Virtual Financial Corp.; I've also written training guides for the IT department at IUPUI and taught software classes there.
Travel is one of my favorite things to do and I have always greatly appreciated the fact that I live in a country that allows me to do that. Ive been to Italy several times and discovered relatives of mine through the Internet and stayed with them. They were a blast and I love them dearly. I learned Italian (enough to get by) and write to them sporadically.

I'm a strong believer in exercise and work out 3 x a week at least. Elliptical machine, nautilus, free weights, mat exercises and I have just recently added the treadmill to my workout. Exercise is good for you. Do it!
A piano sits in my livingroom and I play easy piano but I play it rarely. Who has the time to do all this stuff? I sing for my own pleasure. I have always liked Karen Carpenter. I like any song that has the word fly in it. As in: Fly Me to the Moon, or, Come Fly with Me, or the more pop-type tune, I Just Wanna Fly. Oh, and don't forget, I Believe I Can Fly. I mean I actually really like these songs, they just happen to have the word fly in them. (Even I find that hard to believe.)
To be serious for a moment, in the summer of 2004, I was involved with an organization called the Exchange Club. They put on a traveling event called The Healing Fields. See: http://healingfield.org/ to see some spectacularly beautiful photos of rows upon rows of American flags flying across rolling fields. It's quite a moving sight to be there. You should check it out when they come to your neighborhood. Boy Scouts help to install over 3,000 flags representing the people who were killed on 9/11. They had a memorial and the public was allowed to wander through the flag site (at Oaklawn Memorial Gardens) for an entire week. I was the only non-Exchange Club volunteer even though the event was advertised on TV and the radio.
If you would like to be a part of The Healing Field, you can register your city, contact the Healing Field Foundation at 866-375-FLAG or email info@healingfield.org
I have friends in NY with whom I stay in touch. Linda, is a childhood friend and I've known her since I was five-years-old. She is a theology major and was close friends with the priest (Father Mike) who ran into the WTC to give last rites to the fire chiefs who died that day. He was killed from falling debris. Jack, her husband is a fire fighter who now travels extensively speaking about the events of 9/11. He knew all the fire fighters who died. Well, so did Linda for that matter. Linda, Jack, Jack's friend and I used to double-date in our teen years. Now there's a memory from the vault of time! Linda and I write to each other every Christmas and keep each other up-to-date with what's going on.
Im thrilled to be able to contribute to this wonderful, ingenious and fun website.
