I'm an avid....well, I'm not an avid anything, but I love that word. Avid. I love to say avid. Avid, avid avid. I'm an avid avid-sayer. Maybe I'll change my name to Avid.
I'm learning that this is funner (funner?) if you take it a little more seriously, so that's what I'm trying to do. My WOT has always been something I take fairly seriously, as I don't want to mess people up with my recommendations, and my reviews are always from the heart. What I'm trying to get better at is rating every review I read, since I get a little frustrated that many more people read my reviews than rate them. PLEASE RATE MY REVIEWS even if you think I stink like a pair of gym socks in Hollandaise sauce after a week in a Florida swamp, because sometimes, to be honest, I do.
When I give ratings, I'm a not stickler for the small stuff. I like a clean, flowing style, but even if you write like Speed Racer talks, I'll give you an HR if it's a good, coherent, understandable, factually correct review that people can use and make sense of. Here's what I'm thinking when I rate reviews:
HR: Good stuff, of interest to me, detailed and thorough. You did your homework, wrote about an experience close to your heart, or at least made up stuff that sounded pretty good (and I'm not fooled easily). Also, most likely, you express yourself well and feel some passion about the topic that comes through in your writing. Facts and figures are always useful, but passionate argument is what helps people make a decision. Personally, that's what I like to see.
R: Good review with some gaps. Maybe it's a little short, maybe it's a little long, maybe it rambles a little, but on the whole it's pretty good. No major faults....maybe just doesn't wow me.
SR: Major gaps or incorrect information. Could also show some irrational bias (like "I hate Japanese motorcycles!"), or it could be you need to lay off the perception-altering substances and let your mind clear before writing opinions.
NR: Offensive, dumb, ouright incorrect biased in the extreme, damaging to people who read it and believe it. You should have your internet access taken away and be sterilized. I think I've only given one of these so far, and it gave me a perverted sort of pleasure because it was sooooo deserved. You won't get one of these from me if you post in the wrong section....only if your review stinks like a frat house on Sunday morning.
Who do I like?
dspeirs is my longtime friend...known him since way before Epinions. He's the Epinions Finance Channel manager now, and he also writes good reviews on a variety of topics. From the outside looking in, it even looks like he's working hard at this Epinions gig, although I know that can't be.
Brian_Igo takes his motorcycle reviews seriously without taking the fun out of them. Lots of good stuff, and he writes like a pro. Also, he's bald, which is cool.
Ambernop is cool because she likes the same kind of motorcycles as I do, and her beer reviews read like a Shakespearean sonnet. Mmmm...beer.
Workingmomof2 is great for fitness products, particularly her nutrition bar reviews. I think she knows more about some of these bars than the manufacturers do.
There are others I'm forgetting, I'm sure, but the beauty of the internet is that you can change stuff whenever you want and then deny you ever screwed up to begin with, which I have done before and will no doubt do again.
I think that's it. Any questions, email me and I promise to reply. Thank you, and a pleasant evening to you all.
