The Adlib Write-Off

Boo ya! This shit's over! But you can still write an Adlib entry at any time. Just follow the rules below (except the dates), and email me the link to your entry.

In the wake of the Lexiphiliac Write-Off hosted by Annexationand FraggleMom, I find that my creative side remains unsated, despite the feast that it was gorged upon. In this light, I have decided to host my first ever write-off, based on the idea that came to me as I bolted upright from slumber last night (no joke): writing adlibs on Epinions.

What's an Adlib?

Not wanting to make any assumptions about the
pre-existing knowledge of anyone reading this, I will give a brief example of
what an adlib is. First, you have a list of categories that the reader
must fill in with specific words of their choosing. Second, you have a
pre-written text, containing blank spaces to accomodate words from the
reader-supplied list, in pre-determined places. Note that the reader
should have no exposure to this pre-written text while filling in their category
list. Third, the reader takes the words from their category list, and
places them into the corresponding slots in the text. The result is,
hopefully, quite humorous to the reader, and to anyone else they should decide
to share it with.

I feel an example is in order, for the sake of clarity. Here is our Category
List (feel free to try this one out with me):

• retail location


• holiday or special event


• type of person


• object


• adverb


• verb, past tense


• body location

And here are the words I've chosen for these categories:

• retail location: the mall


• holiday or special event: Christmas


• type of person: bum


• object: fountain


• adverb: purposefully


• verb, past tense: kicked


• body location: ass

I'm sure you can see where I'm going with this, but I'll share the Text
anyway:

When I was in (retail location) doing some last-minute shopping
for (holiday or special event), I noticed a (type of person)
lying next to the (object). I (adverb) strode up to the (type
of person), (verb, past tense) it hard in the (body location),
and went on with my shopping.

And of course there are countless other possibilities for this simple little
adlib. But I think you get the idea. Also, I should make mention
that when you want to have multiple entries in the same category (i.e. two of
"object"), you can take care of the potential confusion by listing
them as "object 1" and "object 2", or something
similar. As long as the reader is able to tell the them apart, both in
your Category List and in your Text.

Who Should Join

Interested? Good! This write-off is open to anyone and
everyone. I don't care if you hate me, or if you think I hate
you. It doesn't matter if you were the first person who trusted me on this
site, or if the thought of trusting me sends you into a fetal position.
This write-off is about having fun, and is meant to give other people a
laugh. Please note that there will be no consumerrific information
found in the "reviews" of this write-off, let alone SCADS of
consumerrific information. If you are just looking to kick back and have
fun, drop me an email at the address given above (include your user name on
Epinions please). Nobody will be turned
away.

The Rules

Here are the rules, as plain as can be:

1. Your adlib must contain a clearly defined Category List and a Text,
   as shown in the example above.


2. Your adlib should suggest that the reader either write down their words for the
   Category List on a piece of paper as they read, or that they use some manner
   of text editor on their computer as they go. In either case, stress the importance
   of keeping track of which word goes with which category.


3. Your adlib must contain "Adlib write-off", "Adlib
   W/O", or something similar, in the title.


4. Your adlib must mention the fact that the reader can come to my profile
   page to see a full list of links to the participants.


5. Your adlib must be posted in the "General Comments about
   Epinions.com" category.


6. Your adlib must be posted between Wednesday, January 23rd and Sunday,
   January 27th of this year (2002).


7. No early submissions please. This should not be a problem,
   given the generous window of posting times.


8. Have fun, damn it!
