About gandalf2001
A number of people have responded to my comments on the epinions ratings problems. Nothing formal will be done, I know, but the problems still exist. For a while, I'm going to experiment with rating reviews according to what the words in the ratings actually mean. If I don't feel the review added anything to my knowledge or perspective, it is Not Helpful. If it only added a little, it is Somewhat Helpful. A competent, well-written review that assists me in understanding the product or item being reviewed is Helpful. If the writing is exceptional, and the review dramatically improves my understanding, it is Very Helpful. And "Most Helpful"? That would have to be very, very good, in absolute as well as relative terms. It should not only be Most Helpful relative to other reviews in the category. It must be Most Helpful relative to a normal distribution of reviews in the subject, if that were in place. This is an experiment. I realize that not everyone will like this. As a result (and in self-defence), I will hold off publishing any more reviews for a while. April 15, 2002
