About gaviidae
|
*"A fool tries to frighten his opponents by some good-sized pieces of misrepresentation---the good citizen, instead of trying to terrify the opposition, ought to prove his case in fair argument." Thucydides, 427 B.C.
In our winter habitat we are called "snowbirds." In our summer habitat we are called "snowchickens." But at Epinions we are Gaviidae, and I am Gavia Immer. We chose those names for our Epinions identity because they are biological names for a species native to the state where we were born. That species migrates seasonally between habitats in the midwest and southwest, which is pretty much our practice now in our retirement.
My wife is a retired Kindergarten teacher, and I am a retired electronics engineering* manager. We have had rewarding and satisfactory careers, and are now enjoying a VERY satisfactory, and, we believe, well-earned retirement.
Reading and writing are a primary retirement enjoyment---but may soon be limited by the onset of macular degeneration.
"Engineering---It's a great profession.
There is the fascination of watching a figment of the imagination emerge through the aid of science into a plan on paper.
Then it moves to realization in stone--or metal--or energy.
Then it brings jobs and homes to people.
Then it elevates the standard of living and adds to the comforts of life.
That is the engineer's great priviledge."
