Photo up soon I promise!
Back from exams after a self-imposed exile from epinions - one month off HAD killed my drive a little...but I'm back in full effect with my "Permutation City" review (after Mangiotto 'unfairly' - to my mind - panned the Matrix... it got me thinking the sci-fi way...). Its my first book review so let me know whatcha think.
Thanks to Erinys who slammed my Alien 3 review in the nicest possible way =o] - and shares my taste in Russian rocket fuel - it seems. Much respect.
Also thanks to redwolfoz who credits me with "being a screenwriter!" If I could only get some to the screen!!! *wink*
So who am I?
Anyway, I'm a 25 year old Australian film student hoping to attend AFTRS (Australian Film, Television and Radio School) but currently based in Perth - Western Australia at Edith Cowan University. That's right - the most isolated city on Earth (thank God for the internet - its not all that bad.)
Through screenwriting I hope to get into directing "dark faery tales"... but that's the long term game plan =o]
Among my travels I've been a politician's assistant, an operations officer directing fire trucks statewide, finished a University degree (Political Science at UWA), run rave parties, and administered deceased estates for a living (a dead waste of time... hur hur).
I am currently looking for work following the end of my marketing officer contract for a local engineering firm - anyone in Perth need a semi-cute male ornament? *wink*
I love writing and this site seems to be a cool place and great opportunity to hone my skills. I'm always open to new info about the stuff I post about - so please fire away!
Firstly I'm hoping to put up an archive of the classic movies that I love (and some I hate) - plus some albums - in order to give people a feel for what I like and possibly the directions I would head in... then I'll start doing more current and offbeat releases...
The movies that impress me most usually have a fair deal of head content and are a complete integrated package - a artistic total concept from lighting, sound, camerawork, script and acting onwards... cinema as a medium has the power of transporting an audience more than any other - particularly when using state of the art sound design and slick direction. However, I think an original or quirky idea (and one that makes you think in new ways) is often more valuable than a megabudget - and my choice of films reflect that...
I'm also planning on posting about films which are relevant to other film students - I hope that this will assist them in any essays that they might have *wink wink* - or at least give them some ideas...
Although I've gone into some of the movies that I love above - there are, predictably, a hell of a lot more of them out there and I hope to add to my range of reviews over time.
I (infamously among my peers) did a shot by shot breakdown of 13 different supernatural horror films of the 1980's for my Uni Course last semester - I can virtually give you a count of "seconds of violence by gendered/non-gendered villians to male/female characters" for films ranging from Hellraiser through the Nightmares and so on... amazing what you can get a degree in huh!!! For those innerested - my sample (surprisingly) found that the frequency of sexualised violence is actually equal inflicted on men AND women... Musicwise I LOVE electronica and I actually own a Yamaha A3000 sampler - it was always my ambition (when younger) to make storming rave orientated hard trance but there are only so many hours in the day! =]
For some music I really dig please check out my best friend Jase From Outta Space on MP3.com - he's an amazingly talented musician (you should see him live)...
Although I love electronica - I hate cheese - the music I'm into has to be fully textured and deep... Please check my Sergeant Pepper's of the __ series to get an idea of what I consider genius in production...
Since joining this group - I've been VERY impressed by the following people :
Mike_Bracken - here is a man with an encyclopaedic knowledge of Hong Kong movies and Horror... his reviews are a generally exhaustive breakdown of the styles, history and influences of movies, significant shots within them and so on - and he should be the first port of call for any Film Student studying horror and looking for more ammunition for that vital term paper... seriously! mangiotto- Why you Americans are squabbling between yourselves so frenetically over potential Presidents when this legend exists amongst you is beyond me...for a breakdown of the styles and influences (both artistic and literary) on films (within films) he cannot be beaten... seriously BRILLIANT. Erinys - the ying to Mang's yang - or is that the other way around? A professional freelance writer whose staggering talents are pointed towards all manners of topics. Her heated discussions with Mangiotto in the comments of his reviews are probably the most entertaining part of epinions and reveal their largely untapped reservoirs of literary excellence. She's brilliant. redwolfoz - as well as a fellow Aussie (OI OI OI!!!) the wolfster contributes a great review on a range of movies and products - I agree with the general style of review which doesn't always reveal significant plot parts of movies but encourages you to see them... annexation - da original pimp ninja... raver, party animal, and connosseur of heat ointments... nice one bruvva!!! sundrop - has great taste in music hirohito99 joins the list on the strength of one review only - his Halloween write-off... which wrote me off with laughter... warped and brilliant... asiabrew - gave me my first encouragement on epinions and writes an entertaining review of various products... plus she loves her tea - is wonderful to "chat" to - and is damn cute besides... (Phil ducks enraged Asiabrew's fist) In exciting news she is now epinions newest advisor - can't think of a more deserving writer...congratulations!!! furie - great taste in fiction, films and video games complimented by off beat sense of humour and great style javadevil Brilliant, in depth reviews of off-beat films and anime, along with intriguing personal commentary makes him a favourite psychovant - anyone using Giger art for their photo can't be all bad - plus she writes a scorching review of alternative cinema robtran despite his unfortunate taste in music - extending as it does to, of all things, John Denver (sorry rob) - he writes a highly articulate, balanced review of everything from classic cinema to schlocky horror comedy... which is great... Guru_Tigger My mate Simon from Western Australia - who was coaxed on to the site after being hammered with epinions from yours truly - a brilliant DJ (and classically trained pianist) who plays the full spectrum of electronica from his 8 crates of imported vinyl (he is a confirmed e-bay addict)... email him and force him to do more music reviews!!! sibhreach last but not least - epinions' own Faerie Queen - who has the distinction of being the only person I've ever chatted to for 8 hours solid on ICQ - highly literate and solid epinions on just about anything!
Respect to all the massive...
Hope you're all happy out there... please check out my growing range of reviews... =]
In case you're innerested :
Album(s) I'm currently caning : Hybrid Live Angle in Sydney The current state of the art dance music - brilliant trance/breakbeat with the backing of a 90 piece orchestra (petition epinions to have this album added for review... =o]) Beastie Boy's Paul Boutique - Damn - caught believing my own hype *chuckle* - this tape is my current companion in the car, and I'm loving the revisit... check my full review for details...
Film(s) I'm waiting for with bated breath Lord of the Rings - from New Zealand auteur Peter Jackson - infamous for horror/comedy/gross-out hits Meet the Feebles,Braindead (US Title - Dead/Alive), Bad Taste, The Frighteners - and excellent psychological journey Heavenly Creatures - he gets to "do" the highest point of fantasy fiction with a megabudget... it'll be terrific Requiem for a Dream Darren Aronofsky's penetrating and scathing anti-drug movie - it hasn't been released in the Land of Oz yet, but you can guarantee when it does, myself and all my mates will be front row centre - chewing down Jaffas and Fantales and hunting for the Soundtrack... if you haven't seen Pi yet you must... state of the art dark journey making with the best soundtrack of the 90's... Book(s) I'm plowing through/re-reading Sophie's World a gobsmacking summary of 2,000 years of philosophical thought - as relayed by a mysterious bohemian to a 15 year old girl over the course of 400 pages. Dropped in my lap as if by divine providence, and will honestly change the way that you look at things... brilliant stuff.
Peace
PS Please note changed email addy - and feel free to drop me a line. Does anyone know how the hell you get a photo up anyway (Phil betrays his staggering level of HTML ignorance in one fell swoop) - all mails appreciated!!!
