Up until January of this year, I was a special education teacher. I worked in a program that served special needs preschoolers and toddlers called PPI (Pre-Primary Impaired), now called ECDD (Early Childhood Developmentally Delayed). Our program served children 2 and 1/2 to 6 years olds who had speech and language impairments, or had significant delays in two or more of the following areas: fine motor, gross motor, cognitive, daily living skills, or general readiness. Many of our students came just for the speech therapy, but many also had cognitive delays. Some will be labeled "learning disabled" when old enough. As of January we also had four autistic children, and two with Down's Syndrome. Many of our children enter regular education kindergarten when they turn 5, and some will go on to elementary level special education rooms. A very few will go into our intermediate school district special education program.
On January 20, 2003 I gave birth to our first child, our daughter. She weighed 8 lbs., 1 oz. and was 19 and 1/2 inches long. Today, she is 6 months old and weighs 18 lbs+ and is 29 inches long! It amazes me how fast she grows! She is the love of our lives, and though she learns more each day, I think I learn just as much right along side of her. I've been on leave from my job since she was born, and am requesting extended leave when school resumes in the fall. I've decided to be a stay at home Mom! This is the most important job I've ever done!
My husband deserves mention here too! We've been married three years. We live in Michigan and the three of us share our home with three cats and our 4 year old lab mix Josie. We affectionately call them "Josie and the Pussycats." We also have an aquarium full of fish. Our daughter has just started to discover that she can "pet" the animals, and she especially loves it when the dog barks.
