About hought20
|
I am a 24 year old linguistics student at a university in Michigan, with vague plans to go to grad school, where I'll study more linguistics. I am married, and have two cats.
When writing an opinion, I try my best to keep in mind that I'm writing the opinion for someone else -- I'm trying to convince someone to support or fail to support a business, an author, or a musician that I've come across. I tend to be vehement in my likes, and quiet about my dislikes. This may or may not change as I go along and think of more reviews to write. I tend to have great loyalty to particular musicians or authors, and it takes a great vote of confidence from more than one friend before I'll buy any big, expensive product or try out a musician I've never heard (authors are a little different, but if I don't like them I typically just don't remember them).
When I'm rating other peoples' opinions, here's how I look at things:
Highly Recommended: I like to see writing that makes me smile, or moves me in some other fashion (besides furious indignation). A way with words will get a highly recommended rating. Essentially, well, the requirements under 'Recommended' have to be filled too.
Recommended: Essentially, the review has to be comprehensive and useful, and give me a clear picture of the product being reviewed. I want facts. I want something to base my opinion on. I also want to know, if it's a book or music, how it made you feel. What emotions or thoughts were elicited? I'm reading your particular review to get your particular opinion.
Somewhat Recommended: This is reserved for a review that has really bad grammar, spelling and formatting but mostly fulfills the requirements of 'Recommended,' and really good, entertaining writing that doesn't give me enough information about the product. This rating will also go to folks who write a review on something they haven't read or haven't seen, but have somewhat well formed opinions on the plot that caused them to choose not to see it in the first place.
Not Recommended: This is for people who obviously don't care at all about what they're writing, or how they're writing. Plagarists and other such villains will get this rating, as well, although I've not run across any yet.
I guess that about sums it up. Please, please, please, if you rate anything I write below 'Recommended,' post a comment and let me know why, so I can improve.
