Alright, no boring details of awkward youth or college haze of engineering texts, alcohol, and parties (ok, maybe not boring, but definitely off-limits for a public forum!)
So what can I tell you? I've got a BS in ChemE. I married my college sweetheart; no kids, one dog.
I'm a certifiable car nut, but I'm simply hamstrung by time and money. I watch Speedvision constantly. I tape auto races, and I know more about cars than I'll admit in social situations. So, yeah, if I had plenty of resources, I'd have a car collection, tinker every night, and race every weekend. So what's a guy with responsibility and limited resources to do?
Here's my recent auto history:
My last vehicle, a 1995 Ford Bronco, helped me enjoy my other passions, hunting and shooting sports. It wasn't long before I started tinkering, and before I knew it, I had added alloy wheels, offroad tires, conical filter, supercharger, headers, exhaust, soundproofing, and a stereo system, all in my garage. It was loud, not practical for commuting, and it was difficult for my clients to climb into the thing. It was consuming my spare time, and I soon realized I wanted to get back into a car. This was tricky; my car wants and needs just didn't overlap (ok, so a BMW M5 works, but I've got house payments, y'know).
That is, until I hit the local Audi dealership for a test drive. I found the best compromise of fun, performance, and practicality in a daily driver (see my 1998.5 Audi A4 review). I continue to dream of a weekend/race car, but while I save, I'm driving a car that after two years continues to put the goofiest, ear-to-ear grin on my face every time I drive it.
