I think Epinions is a great idea, its fun to write reviews (and in some cases theraputic!). And, it is a great source of info for buying decisions in particular. I have used it extensively and have been grateful to the many members who have contributed. I am sure I have avoided a great deal of disappointment and/or hassle by getting some good inside scoop on things before buying.
One thing I don't like about Epinions is that there tends to be a lot of fervor on some member's parts about their status, how their opinions are rated, how big their web of trust is, etc. Some people seem to be obsessed with whether or not they are a "lead" or "advisor", etc, or get irritated if their reviews are not rated "very helpful", or are picky graders on generally very good reviews because of some kind of status hangup. To those folks, I suggest that you chill out and think about more important things in life! When you get right down to it, this is nothing more than a fancy message board.
For those members who are polite and helpful, and the many "Leads", "Advisors", and just plain 'ol regular members like me, etc who have taken the time to read my stuff and offer useful advice, I thank you. You are a major reason why Epinions works.
I think reviews done by people who have actually bought and own things are the best. They are 10 times more useful.
There is definitely more "stuff" in the world that I would like to have, than there is money in my bank account. But, I try to keep in mind the important things in life that have nothing to do with money or toys - I hope you do too!
