What's New
6/29/01 - I'M BACK! I hope.... First of all, appologies to all on my trust list for disappearing so suddenly - my life just
suddenly desided that I am to have no leasure time. That slavedriver! Times are easing up a bit now at the turn of the month, at least I hope so,
and I should be able to get back to writing and rating in the next few days. Also thanks to anyone new trusting me, and my appologies that
I haven't checked out your reviews yet - I promise to make that first order of business!
6/29/01 - I've been made a music advisor! What to do to become an adivisor: NOTHING. And a lot of it. I wonder if I took another month and a half
break whenther I would get another advisorship... hmm... I guess I got it for past deeds, and for that I am grateful, though somewhat surpriced. I'll
promise to act very advisorly, whatever that means. Perhaps I'll inflict upon you a picture of me sometime soon.
6/29/01 - Writers to check out There'll be links to other writers soon. So be patient. For now there's just the couple of links below
Essential reading for outside-US members: Recently I've been reading the FAQ's of the site, and discovered that for us non-US residents,
redeeming credits is not as easy as simply pressing a button and waiting for the check... oh no, there's plenty of paperwork involved. I intended
to write an essay on the subject but selden beat me to the punch. You can find the
excellent essay by clicking here: Why The Rigmarole Epinions?
For a brilliant example of inspired writing, and some great fun advice, do yourself a favour and go check out jkkelley's brilliant
essay on how to write reviews. It certainly made me want to spice things up a little... You can see the essay here.

Subject: Jarno
The subject is an average pale skinned, male member of the species Homo Sapiens. He's a Finn too, a fact which he'll doubtlessly
shamelessly point out at every opportunity. He's an evil baby eating atheist, though he'll deny all but the atheist part. (He would
now, wouldn't he!) You might actually mistake him for a pretty decent guy.
Let's let Jarno speak for himself:
I don't have a consistent Epinions personality. I don't think I'll be aquiring one any time soon though...
I write serious stuff when I have something serious to say, I'll go for my pathetic self-indulgent attempts at humour when I feel like it.
So don't classify me by one or two reviews, I'm a changeling... :-)
I am a freethinker, a humanist with a deep appreciation for the world around us, and a never-ending desire to learn - thus my insatiable appetite for books.
I do love to debate, and value humility and open-mindedness in discussing beliefs and ideas. Even if the views are in conflict, the people holding them need not be. We must understand and acknowledge that we all are fallible human beings.
I am anti-dogmatic - I believe that no idea or belief should ever be considered infalliable - that is the most dangerous sort of arrogance,
as people who don't take into account the fact that they might just be wrong tend to put themselves above people who don't share those views.
We can all see the results, as behind just about all attrocities, great human caused humanitarian tragedies, there is a group who hold their
beliefs as ultimate authority. As long as we remember that our beliefs, even the strongest ones, are just that - beliefs, not knowledge, we'll be fine.
If I've learned something about writing here, it's that the best reviews are created when you are having fun writing, or when you really
have something to say. You have to write for yourself as much as you write for an audience - if you don't feel quite
happy with what you have written, take a break, and re-write before submitting. You'll be much happier afterwards!
It might not always work, you'll always have bad days, but better to try and fail than accept mediocrity without trying.
Don't be shy about dispencing advice to me if you think you spot something in my writing which could use some work, and if you find something just
painfully stupid in what I write, you'd be doing me a favour by dropping me a note...
Nothing is worse than walking around with your fly open with no-one brave enough to point out your inappropriate ventillation...
Similarly, if I've left some advice to you in a comment, or contacted you by e-mail for the same purpose, please take it in the spirit it is given -
I don't want to come out as arrogant, as I am far from perfect myself.
My rating
In reading reviews, I look for good quality writing, informative and original, entertaining, or gripping stuff. If you feel I've left an unfair, or somehow mistaken
rating on your review, please don't hesitate to drop me a note and ask me about it. Though usually, if I rate differently from others (like beeing the only "helpful"
among a sea of "Very Helpfuls", I leave a comment.)
My reviews
My central interests are in music and literature, with single-malt whiskies fitting in there somewhere too.
In music, you'll find me reviewing quite a variety of styles, perhaps with a leaning towards the alternative and strange.
There might be surprises there too... I try not to be too predictable :-)
In literature, I lean a bit more towards non-fiction, popular science, to be specific. Fiction is by no means foreign for me though.
