Howdy. I grew up on an Idaho potato farm, and am proof that you CAN take the boy off the farm AND take the farm out of the boy! I first experienced Europe at age 16, and have hardly been back to the farm since.
Ive found my way through 22 nations and 43 US states on 37 different airlines. I've stayed in five-star accomodations (think Hotel Del Coronado), a zillion Marriotts, Hiltons, and Hyatts, youth hostels, friend's sofas, and camped on Rajastani sand dunes. I've seen it all. I've learned that the quality of accomodation you choose is largely dependent on your willingness to have adventure--and your reasons for traveling in the first place. I will generally stay anyplace as long as it's safe, clean, quiet, and comfortable. Don't get me wrong...I adore a five-star hotel or resort, but would rather save my money to spend on a LOT of travel rather than spend a lot of money on a little travel.
Generally, I believe that spending more than $150 USD/night anyplace in the world is a rip-off. For crying out loud, IT'S A BED AND A SHOWER.
My favorite travel spot is NYC (been many, many times) and generally have enjoyed staying at the Best Western President. For an occasional upgrade I recommend Marriott's Courtyard Times Square.
If you're ever flying in/out of Vancouver B.C., try to plan for a night at the sparkling Fairmont Vancouver Airport property. It's amazingly quiet, a plane watcher's dream, and has the most innovative and comfortable hotel rooms of anyplace I've ever stayed. I didn't want to leave.
My favorite overseas city destination is Paris, with Hong Kong close behind. Stay anyplace...just go! For a beach holiday, I think Hawaii has it going on. Soooo beautiful, plus nobody hawks stuff to you while you're trying to relax. Second choice for beaches is southern Thailand.
I speak Mandarin Chinese, perform in musical theatre, use a Mac or PC, work well with others, read airline timetables, talk world events, ski the black diamond runs, sing, raise potatoes, conduct a choir, run long distances, speak well in public, play cocktail piano, write poetry, cook Indian food, drive a semi, pick up M&M's with chopsticks, compose music, slalom waterski, and play the accordion. I enjoy the fine arts, spy novels, hiking, beach time, and movies.
I have my own creative marketing/communications business. If you, or anyone you know, needs expert creative marketing solutions (ideas, websites, advertising, publicity), send them my way.
