First, sorry about the pictures. Sometimes they come through. Usually they don't. Go figure. The trick seems to be to hit your "back" key, then go "forward" and when you do, voila, they show up (or at least some of them... okay more than did the first time, but maybe just one or two.)
My real name is not jystrebler.
It's Jimmy.
I got my first real six string...
I was given my first real six string, if you can call it real, in the 4th grade. Its features were that it "included real guitar strings" and was "guaranteed to seldom break".
I BOUGHT my first guitar when I was in the 8th grade with 2 years' saved up lunch money. I traded it away for a little model airplane. Shrewd. I'm telling you, I was shrewd.
I sang in a few bands and at age 16, with the help of the "Beatles Complete" (the blue-cover book) began playing in earnest, especially after the death of John Lennon.
(This is supposed to be the "long biography", so bear with me...)
Since then, it's been a non-stop progression of guitars as I've moved from one phase of life to the next.
I've hauled that beat up old Sigma DM-4 around the world and back with me. It's basically been retired out to pasture these days.
In my brief pre-Army, post-High School phase, I had an ES-335, a P-bass and the trusty DM-4. I also briefly had a Marshall 45 watt combo amp and a giant Gretsch Chet Atkins.
In the Army, I had an Aria Pro II guitar that looked like a can opener. It got replaced by a Kramer Pacer Deluxe a couple years before I got out. I also briefly had an Ibanez something or other that I quickly sold.
Most people mark the passage of time with places they've lived, or people they've dated, or things they've done.
Yeah, yeah, I have all those things too, but mostly I've marked the passage of time with the guitars I've played, the music I played on them, and the folks I played that music with.
Fast forward 20 years...
Now, I'm married, with an adorable (they're always adorable when they're yours... They're "terrier sized germ bags", to quote one NPR commentator... when they're somebody else's) son who makes me smile every day.
