About KathiV
|
I'm a marketing and public relations writer, wannabe world-famous novelist, media consultant and singer. In my spare time, I enjoy such indulgent hobbies as sleeping, eating, breathing and cheering the Northwestern Wildcats on their road to a bowl bid. Go Cats!
ADVICE ON EDUCATION
At present, I am working full-time at a university in the NY metro area--now an administrator, formerly an adjunct professor--and am attending my fifth institution of higher learning. These circumstances have given me a unique perspective on higher ed and I'm able to advise with knowledge from both the "insider" and the student perspective. Additionally, I'm a former secondary school teacher and spent a short but telling amount of time in the NYC public schools. Teaching is something you've got to experience to understand.
HOW I REVIEW MOVIES AND BOOKS
Having spent the majority of my career writing promotional materials for movies, TV programs and books, I try to avoid the pat plot synopses--the same ones I used to write--you can find on book jackets, the back of video covers, the TV listings magazine or the movie section of your newspaper. Instead, I talk about what touched me--either positively or negatively--and why I would or would not recommend the book or movie to someone else.
HOW I REVIEW MUSIC
If there's one area in which I consider myself an expert, it's music. I've been singing since the age of 3--professionally since 15--and have studied music theory, composition and history, as well as attempting to play several instruments (the brain is willing but the hands are weak). I review albums in the genres I like best--rock, pop, contemporary jazz and classical--based on the quality of the vocals or instrumentals, the production values and the appropriateness of the materials for the particular artist. I also have a weakness for Christmas music and encourage others to sample some of the many offerings out there, particularly at holiday time.
HOW I REVIEW PRODUCTS
Since my expertise is in communications, marketing and writing, I have little or no technical knowledge about any of the products I review, with the possible exception of magazines. Instead, I review them as a consumer and discuss what worked and what did not work, paying particular attention to whatever advertising claims the manufacturer makes. In general, if the product does what it says it does, I'll give it a favorable review; if it does not do it, I'll give it a thumbs-down. This does not necessarily mean the product is bad or that it won't work for someone else, it just means that it did not work for me.
