Hmmm
where should I start, I wonder? California
Books
Finance
Books
Wine
Books
Travel
Books.
Books. Simply said, it all comes back to books.
Although a math geek by education, I am a literature enthusiast by inclination. I read. Excessively. I have a profound appreciation for those writers who take our simple alphabet and miraculously arrange these common building blocks of language into something amazing.
Born, raised and educated in Northern California, I have been led to the Lone Star State through a career in corporate finance. In addition to exploring literature, I spend my free time enjoying wine, beer, independent film, travel, and photography. I am not above putting my extensive education in probability to good use at casual weekend poker games with my friends.
Now, if I could just crack the code to the stock market and retire early
Like that's going to happen.
If you decide to seek out one out-of-print book this year, it should be this one:
Cameron Crowe's debut, Fast Times at Ridgemont High - Far better than the film, it's a shame that copies of this book are so hard to come by.
It's not unusual for me to have Meredith Wilson's "Youth Fitness Song" (also known as "The Chicken Fat Song") running through my head while I'm working on spreadsheets in the office.
I can't remember what television was like before Six Feet Under, Buffy and The Amazing Race. I miss Buffy. And I miss Angel, too. I can't stop watching The Amazing Race, The Daily Show, and The Colbert Report. Why do the shows that I love fail to thrive? My most recent favorite show: Deadwood. All three seasons were excellent, and I'm still hoping that the two-hour movies that have been discussed actually do get made. Reno 911! has graduated from a guilty pleasure to a viewing priority; I never knew that bass taping could be so humorous. I've recently found guilty pleasure in watching America's Next Top Model and Beauty and the Geek.
At the moment, I think that I may have a crush on Seth Bullock from Deadwood. Not Timothy Olyphant, but Seth Bullock. I don't know, though... it looks like he may need to battle Sayid on Lost for my affections. Sayid's got all of Seth's intensity, competence, and determination, and on top of that, he lacks Seth's scary temper control issues. Though I'm not sure about his cold torture abilities. Bravo to him for exposing Henry Gale. And he can do math in quickly in his head... sexy! I'll have to reconsider their respective merits after the 2006 - 2007 Lost season.
If I were funnier in print, I'd want to be a recapper for TWoP. Three cheers for Miss Alli, whose brilliant observations consistently impress, inspire and amuse me.
I think that 2006 is the year that the network sitcom was revived, at least for me. Between Scrubs, The Office, How I Met Your Mother and My Name is Earl, I'm watching half-hour increments of network TV more than I have in years. Jaime Pressly, John C. McGinley, John Krasinski, B.J. Novak, and Neil Patrick Harris, you have my gratitude.
